Chapter 2 - The Emergency RoomThe red emergency lights of the ambulance flashed rhythmically against the glass windows of Saint Jude Medical Center, casting long, crimson shadows across the private trauma bay.

I lay on the gurney, hooked up to fetal heart monitors, IV bags, and blood pressure cuffs.
Beside my bed stood Alex, his large, calloused hand holding my cold fingers with absolute, unshakeable gentleness. His tactical jacket was discarded, revealing the sharp lines of his broad shoulders, his eyes never leaving the digital screen monitor beside my bed.
The rhythmic, fast chime of a baby’s heartbeat echoed softly through the room: 142 BPM.
Dr. Sarah Lin, a senior obstetrician and close personal friend of Alex's team, stepped back from the ultrasound machine, wiping the blue gel from my stomach with a warm towel.
"The baby is stable, Maya," Dr. Lin revealed softly, a warm, reassuring smile gracing her face. "The placenta suffered a minor marginal tear from the blunt trauma to your thigh, but the fluid levels are good, and her heartbeat is strong. She’s a fighter."
Tears of pure, overwhelming relief spilled over my lashes, soaking into the white hospital pillow.
"She's okay..." I sobbed quietly, clutching Alex's hand tighter against my chest. "My baby girl is okay..."
"She's more than okay," Alex murmured, leaning down to press a soft kiss against my forehead. "And she is never, ever going to hear that bastard's name again."
Dr. Lin cleared her throat, her warm expression shifting into a grave, professional line as she held up a digital clipboard.
"The physical evidence has been fully documented, Maya," Dr. Lin explained cleanly. "The severe blunt force hematoma on your left thigh, the wrist crushing injuries from his boot, and the blood samples taken at the scene. Furthermore, the local police department has already processed the emergency call recording from your phone."
The door to the trauma bay opened softly.
Jax walked into the room, holding a sleek black tablet alongside a sealed evidence bag containing Nicole's smartphone.
"The city prosecutor just unsealed the initial charges, Boss," Jax reported smoothly to Alex. "Trent Vance is being held without bail on charges of aggravated felony assault, attempted fetal homicide, and domestic battery with a deadly weapon."
I looked up, my breath hitching in my chest. "And his family?"
Jax offered a razor-sharp, bitter smile. "Helen and Richard Vance were cited as accomplices to felony assault. And Nicole's phone... well, she forgot to stop recording before she dropped it."
He tapped the tablet screen, showing a high-definition video frame captured from Nicole’s device—clearly showing Helen screaming "Hit her harder!" while Trent raised the thick wooden walking stick over my pregnant body.

"Her own video," I whispered, a cold, quiet realization washing over me. "She recorded her own family's destruction."
"They destroyed themselves the moment they laid a finger on you, Maya," Alex said, his gray eyes locking onto mine with an absolute, unyielding promise. "Now, we take everything else they have left."
