Chapter 7 - The Unbroken Dynasty

Six months later.

The Grand Ballroom of the Halston Hotel was packed once more with white roses, crystal chandeliers, and the elite of Chicago. But this wasn't an engagement party designed to humiliate or conquer.

It was the annual charity gala for the Chicago Children’s Foundation, hosted by the newly appointed president of the board: Evelyn Moretti.

I stood at the podium in a breathtaking crimson silk gown, addressing a room of five hundred of the most powerful corporate leaders, judges, and philanthropists in the Midwest. My parents were not in attendance—they had been quietly uninvited from all society circles, reduced to whispering ghosts in the suburbs. Julian was currently awaiting trial in a federal holding facility in Indiana.

As I stepped down from the stage to rapturous applause, flashes of camera bulbs illuminated the grand hall. But this time, the cameras weren't capturing my humiliation. They were capturing my triumph.

I walked across the polished marble floor toward the VIP table where Nikolai sat alongside Don Lorenzo and the senior members of the Family Council. As I approached, Nikolai stood up immediately, offering his arm with effortless grace and undisguised adoration in his dark eyes.

I slipped my hand into his arm, feeling the massive emerald ring catch the light of the crystal chandelier above us.

“You were magnificent,” Nikolai whispered, leaning down as we took our seats at the head table.

“I learned from the best,” I smiled, raising my champagne flute toward him.

Don Lorenzo chuckled deeply from across the table, raising his own glass in silent, absolute respect to the woman who had not only survived the betrayal of a lesser man, but had stepped into the dark heart of an empire and claimed it as her own.

The war was over. The traitors were buried. And as I looked out across the glittering ballroom, I knew with absolute certainty that no one would ever mistake me for a secondary choice again.
