Chapter 1 - The Shadow of the Moretti Throne

The dim service corridor smelled of industrial cleaning solution and stale air, a sharp, unglamorous contrast to the crystal chandeliers and champagne flutes of the Halston Hotel ballroom just twenty feet away. Yet, in this narrow strip of concrete and flickering emergency lights, the air felt infinitely purer than the suffocating atmosphere of betrayal I had just fled.
Nikolai Moretti stood before me like a carved monolith of stone and shadow. His bespoke charcoal suit was tailored with surgical precision, contrasting against the dangerous reputation that preceded him across every corrupt boardroom and shipping dock in Chicago. He didn't look like a man attending his younger brother’s engagement party; he looked like an executioner waiting for a verdict.
“You’re out of your mind,” I whispered, though my voice lacked any real conviction. My chest was still heaving from the shock of watching Julian slip my engagement ring onto Serena’s finger while my own mother commanded me to smile for the society columns.
Nikolai took a slow, deliberate step forward, his dark, piercing eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that made it difficult to draw breath. “Am I?” His voice was a low, resonant baritone that vibrated right through the concrete floor. “Julian thinks he has executed a masterstroke. He assumes trading an obedient daughter for a compliant one secures his standing with our father and the Family Council. He is a fool playing with loaded dice.”
“And you?” I challenged, lifting my chin, refusing to let him see the raw, bleeding edges of my humiliation. “What makes you any different? You want a weapon. You want to use me to crush your brother’s political ambitions.”
A faint, dangerous smirk touched the corners of Nikolai’s mouth. “I want what is mine by right of blood, Evelyn. The Moretti empire was built on loyalty, discipline, and absolute control. Julian has none of those. By humiliating you publicly tonight, he has declared war on dignity itself. And in my world, war has a price.”
He extended a hand—not in a gesture of chivalry, but of partnership. It was an alliance forged in the fires of mutual destruction.
“Marry me,” Nikolai said again, the words carrying the absolute finality of a death sentence or a crown. “We announce the engagement at midnight, right before the council envoys depart. We take the high ground, and we leave Julian and your family standing in the ashes of their own ambition.”
My mind raced. If I walked back into that ballroom alone, I would be the pity case of the season—the abandoned bride nursing her wounds while her younger sister wore her stolen future. My mother would lock me away in a guest room to save face; my father would offer another quiet, patronizing nod; and Julian would bask in his calculated triumph.
If I walked back out on the arm of Nikolai Moretti—the most feared, untouchable man in the underworld of Chicago—the entire power dynamic of the city would shift in a single heartbeat.
“There are rules,” I said quietly, my hand trembling only slightly as I slipped my fingers into his. “If I do this, I am not a trophy wife. I am not a quiet ornament for your arm. If we go to war, I fight on the front lines.”

Nikolai’s fingers closed around mine, his grip firm, warm, and entirely unyielding.
“Welcome to the family, Evelyn,” he murmured, his eyes flashing with dark approval. “Let’s give them a show they will never forget.”
