Chapter 4 - The Sanctuary in the Upper WingBy 10:00 PM, the grand mansion was completely cleared of outside noise, returning to a deep, peaceful quiet.

The corrupt legal filings were permanently turned over to federal prosecutors, while Harrison Hart and four senior port authority directors were arrested at their oceanfront estate in South Beach.

I took the private elevator up to the master suite wing, stepping down the carpeted hallway toward Noah’s nursery.

Standing outside the heavy mahogany door were two armed operators, who bowed their heads respectfully as I approached.

I pushed the door open quietly.

The room was dimly lit by a soft, warm nightlamp casting golden reflections across the painted nursery walls.

Sitting in the large velvet rocking chair near the window was Grace.

She wore a soft, comfortable cream sweater provided by my housekeeper, holding three-year-old Noah in her lap. Noah was fast asleep, his small hands curled around Grace’s fingers, his rosy cheeks full of warm, unbroken peace.

Grace turned her head slowly as she heard my footsteps on the rug. Her face still bore a faint pink mark where Vanessa had struck her, but her hazel eyes held a quiet, radiant warmth that made my chest tighten with a fierce, unexpected emotion.

I walked across the soft rug, dropping onto one knee flat beside her rocking chair, bringing my broad frame down level with her eyes.

"Grace," I whispered softly, my voice thick with deep, genuine remorse. "Forgive me... My God, Grace, forgive me for bringing those people into this house."

Grace reached out her free hand, her soft fingers gently, reverently touching my broad shoulder.

"You don't need to ask for forgiveness, Mr. Cole," Grace whispered back, her hazel eyes shining in the dim light. "You protected us. You protected Noah."

I looked down at three-year-old Noah sleeping peacefully against her chest, then raised my eyes to meet hers.

"He called you 'Mommy Grace' eight months ago," I remembered softly, taking her soft hand into my broad palm, interlacing our fingers over Noah's blanket. "And tonight... he told the world you were his mother."

Grace’s lower lip quivered. A single, weightless tear spilled over her lashes, cutting a clean track through her cheek. "I loved him from the first second I held him in this room, Daniel. I promised myself I would protect him no matter what happened to me."

"You aren't just protecting him anymore, Grace," I promised, my storm-gray eyes holding hers with an unbroken, eternal weight. "Starting tonight... I am protecting both of you."
