Chapter 2 - The Audit of the Stolen HeritageBy 2:00 a.m. the following night, the top-floor executive study at The Blackwood Tower overlooking the Hudson River was operating under an impenetrable, non-negotiable tactical lockdown.

Outside the private mahogany doors, eight armed Vance Security operators led by Lieutenant Colonel Marcus Vance guarded every entrance. Inside the sunlit nursery suite adjoining the study, little Lily, Leo, and Noah were fast asleep in plush beds, wrapped in soft fleece blankets, while my home-cooked soup simmered quietly downstairs.

In the main study, sitting around a broad black granite table, were Dominic Blackwood, Senior Corporate Prosecutor Bridget Colton, Maya Lin, and me.

Bridget Colton opened three heavy, red-sealed leather binders, sliding digital ledgers, wiretap logs, and corporate registries flat onto the table before Dominic and me:

"Dominic, Grace," Bridget spoke crisp and fast, her sharp blue eyes holding surgical professional fury. "The forensic audit into Colin Avery, his father Victor Avery, and the Avery-Vance Equity Group is complete."

Dominic stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, his coat off, his white shirt sleeves rolled up to reveal his broad, tattooed arms, his gray eyes burning with an apocalyptic, predatory fire. "Explain it to us, Bridget."

Bridget tapped the digital displays:

THE TWO-HUNDRED-MILLION-DOLLAR EMBEZZLEMENT: Certified banking registries proving Victor Avery and Colin Avery systematically diverted $200 million over five years from the Blackwood Children's Heritage Trust into offshore Liechtenstein accounts.

THE FABRICATED CUSTODY FRAUD: Intercepted wiretaps proving Colin Avery paid $1.5 million to a corrupt probate judge to issue a fake child endangerment order against Dominic Blackwood, planning to place the three children under Avery corporate guardianship.

THE SOVEREIGN BAKERY & MARITIME TRUST: Original probate charters confirming thirty-year-old Donna Grace Bennett-Blackwood (upon her formal appointment as Trust Director) as sole sixty percent controlling common equity holder over the entire Avery-Blackwood Commercial Logistics Fleet.

My knuckles turned stark white against my coffee mug.

Colin Avery hadn't just dumped me because of flour on my sleeve. He had discarded me because his family was preparing to merge with the Vance Syndicate, using stolen Blackwood trust funds to launch their national expansion!

"He called me unpolished, Dominic," I whispered, every word falling like an iron block into the quiet room. "He told me I didn't fit the brand he was building."

Dominic walked around the granite table, dropping flat onto one knee right in front of my chair.

The broad, muscular titan reached out, taking my flour-calloused hands into his broad, warm palms, pressing his lips gently against my knuckles.

"Colin Avery is a blind, pathetic coward who traded a queen for plastic packaging, Grace," Dominic swore, his storm-gray eyes locked onto mine with pure, humble reverence and absolute, protective rage. "Tomorrow morning at the New York Logistics Assembly... we show them who rules this empire."
