Chapter 5 - The Mask Comes OffI didn't flinch. I didn't cry. I didn't shrink back from the lethal predator leaning over the table.

I looked Nicholas Caruso straight in the eye, reached down, and turned my laptop screen directly toward his face.

“If I were trying to set you up, Nico,” I said, my voice deadpan, precise, and ringing with absolute authority, “I wouldn't have just spent the last three hours finding the fatal flaw in the prosecution’s RICO indictment.”

Nico froze. His sharp gray eyes narrowed as he looked from my calm face down to the glowing laptop screen.

“What are you talking about?” he demanded softly.

“Look at exhibit four,” I commanded, pointing a clean, unvarnished finger at the screen. “The federal prosecutor’s primary wiretap recording is dated March 14th at 11:30 PM. They claim your container ship, the Caruso Star, was berthed at Pier 42 in Brooklyn. But look at the international satellite AIS tracking data on the right window.”

Nico leaned closer, his brow furrowing as his eyes scanned the complex legal cross-references, satellite coordinates, and maritime logs displayed across three open windows on my screen.

“The ship was at sea,” Nico murmured, his voice laced with sudden, intense focus.

“Forty miles off Montauk,” I corrected cleanly. “The wiretap recording is a synthetic forgery. And more importantly, the routing numbers used on the forged bill of lading don't belong to Caruso Atlantic. They belong to a subsidiary shell company registered under Hart Meridian Development.”

Nico went completely still.

He slowly lifted his head, staring at me as if seeing me for the very first time. He looked at the open constitutional law textbooks on the side table, the legal briefs, the complex forensic accounting spreadsheets, and finally, at the sharp, brilliant intelligence burning in my eyes.

The spoiled, brainless socialite he thought he had married had vanished. Standing before him was a legal strategist who had just dismantled a federal RICO case in five minutes.

“You’re a law student,” Nico whispered, his voice cracking slightly with dark, awe-struck realization.

“Columbia Law,” I replied smoothly, crossing my arms over my dark sweater. “Top three percent of my class. I graduate in eight weeks.”

A long, heavy silence fell over the sun porch. Outside, the rain began to fall against the glass walls, making a soft, rhythmic patter.

Nico slowly pulled back a chair and sat down opposite me. He rested his elbows on the glass table, steepled his fingers, and looked at me with an intense, unyielding curiosity that made my pulse race.

“Why didn't you tell me?” Nico asked softly.

“Because you locked the connecting door on our wedding night,” I answered honestly, a faint, razor-thin smile touching my lips. “You told me to spend your money, stay out of your wing, and never ask questions. So I let you believe what you wanted to believe.”

Nico stared at me for three long seconds. Then, slowly, a low, deep laugh rumble from his chest—a real, genuine sound of utter fascination and amusement.

“My God,” Nico murmured, shaking his head, his gray eyes shining with newfound respect. “I thought I married a trophy. I married a shark.”

He reached across the table, picking up my mother’s ledger from his manila folder, and set it gently in front of my hands.

“Your father lied to you, Evelyn,” Nico said, his tone dropping into a serious, protective register. “He told you I was blackmailing him with this ledger. The truth is, your mother gave this ledger to my father seven years ago before she died—because she knew James Hart was going to murder her when he found out she was documenting his illegal offshore accounts.”

My breath hitched violently in my throat. Tears pricked the backs of my eyes as the horrifying, final piece of my mother’s death fell into place.

“My father… killed her?” I choked out.

“It wasn't a car accident, Evelyn,” Nico whispered, reaching out his large, calloused hand to gently cover mine. “And your father demanded this marriage because he thought he could use you to get the ledger back before I realized he was framing me.”

Nico’s thumb gently stroked the back of my hand—a warm, steadying touch that sent a powerful wave of strength straight to my heart.

“He underestimated you, Evelyn,” Nico promised, his gray eyes burning with an absolute, lethal resolve. “And now, together, we’re going to take his empire apart.”
