Chapter 4 - The Flaw in the LedgerThree weeks into our marriage, the first crack in Nico’s untouchable armor appeared—and I was the one who found it.

I was sitting on the sun porch with my laptop open, reviewing the public court records of a federal grand jury investigation that had been opened against Caruso Atlantic Logistics six months ago.

The media was reporting that the Southern District of New York was preparing to issue a massive RICO indictment against Nico based on a series of wiretap recordings supplied by an anonymous informant inside his organization. The press was calling it the end of the Caruso dynasty.

I zoomed in on the court exhibits attached to the public docket.

My law training kicked in like a turbocharged engine. I analyzed the wiretap timestamps, comparing them against the maritime shipping logs I had cross-referenced from the public port authority database.

My breath caught in my throat.

The wiretap evidence was a complete fabrication.

The timestamps on the federal recordings claimed that a Caruso vessel had unloaded illegal freight at Pier 42 in Brooklyn at 11:30 PM on March 14th. But the maritime logs—which were cross-verified by international satellite transponders—proved that the vessel was forty miles off the coast of Montauk at that exact hour due to a severe gale warning.

Whoever was feeding the federal prosecutor information wasn't just an informant inside the Caruso syndicate. They were an insider who was actively framing Nico by forging internal corporate logs.

And the handwriting style on the forged logs matched the secondary accounting entries in Hart Meridian’s public filings—my father’s company.

My blood ran cold.

My father hadn't handed my mother’s ledger to Nico to save our family. My father was the one setting Nico up. He had used our marriage to place me inside the Caruso estate as a distraction while he worked with a rival syndicate to destroy Nico from the inside.

Before I could process the terrifying weight of my discovery, the sun porch doors slammed wide open.

Nico walked in, flanked by four armed security guards. His face was carved from granite, his gray eyes burning with a dark, lethal fury I had never seen before.

He looked at me, then gestured sharply to his men. “Clear the estate. Lock the gates. No one leaves without my personal authorization.”

The guards rushed out, leaving Nico standing alone on the porch, his chest heaving under his dark suit.

“Nico?” I asked, standing up slowly, my heart pounding in my ears. “What’s happening?”

Nico took three deliberate steps toward me, pulling a thick manila folder from his suit coat, and slammed it flat onto the glass table beside my laptop.

“The federal prosecutor just served an emergency search warrant on our Midtown offices,” Nico said, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying baritone that vibrated through the glass walls. “They have an informant who claims my wife provided secondary corporate ledgers linking Caruso Atlantic to illegal wire transfers.”

He leaned down, resting his hands flat against the table, bringing his cold, lethal face inches from mine.

“Tell me, Evelyn,” Nico whispered, his slate-gray eyes locking onto my hazel ones like an iron vise. “Did you bring your father’s dirty work into my home?”
