Chapter 4 - The Federal SeizureBefore Harrison Vance could formulate a defense, Detective Cole Voss stepped forward, handing a sealed federal warrant directly to the bailiff, who passed it up to the judge.

"Your Honor," Detective Voss announced, his voice booming through the room, "the United States Attorney's Office has issued emergency arrest warrants for Richard Vance, Eleanor Vance, and Emma Vance for Aggravated Assault, Kidnapping, Tax Evasion, and Wire Fraud totaling forty-two million dollars."

Emma let out a high-pitched, hysterical shriek, jumping out of her chair. "No! It was Mom's idea! I didn't do anything! I was just following instructions!"

"Shut up, Emma!" Eleanor shrieked, turning on her youngest daughter with pure, toxic venom, her refined socialite mask completely shattered into pathetic, groveling pieces. "You took the video! You told your father to drop her behind the strip mall so she would freeze!"

"YOU TOLD ME TO DO IT!" Emma wept hysterically, thrashing against two female federal agents who stepped forward to grab her arms.

CLICK. CLICK.

The heavy steel handcuffs locked around Emma's manicured wrists with an iron snap. Her diamond necklace caught the harsh overhead lights as her arms were forced behind her back.

CLICK. CLICK.

A second set of cuffs locked around my father's wrists. Richard didn't fight; his knees gave out, and he collapsed flat onto the carpeted floor, sobbing pathetically into the rug as the agents dragged him upright.

CLICK. CLICK.

My mother, Eleanor Vance—the woman who had watched me bleed on her kitchen floor, the woman whose name I had screamed in desperate hope—was forced onto her knees by Federal Agent Miller.

As the steel cuffs closed around her wrists, Eleanor raised her head slowly, looking across the courtroom at me.

For nineteen years, she had viewed me as a quiet, compliant daughter she could manipulate, control, and discard whenever I became an inconvenience.

Looking at me now, sitting at the defense table in my immaculate white blazer, my hazel eyes holding hers with zero rage, zero fear, and absolute, unshakeable victory, she realized the terrifying truth.

I wasn't the victim freezing on the pavement anymore. I was the architect of her downfall.

"Tessa...!" Eleanor sobbed, tears cutting clean tracks through her heavy makeup as she was pulled toward the side exit. "Tessa, please! I'm your mother! Forgive me! Tell them to stop!"

I stood up slowly from my chair, my posture straight, my voice calm, clear, and absolute as it echoed through the silent courtroom.

"You aren't my mother, Eleanor," I stated deadpan. "You were just the woman who left me in the cold. And now... the cold is coming for you."
