Chapter 3 - The Siege at Vale TowerBy 8:00 AM the following morning, the eighty-story glass-and-steel monolith of Vale Tower in midtown Manhattan was placed under federal executive lockdown.

Inside the grand boardrooms on the top floor, eighty-two-year-old Adrian Vale sat at the head of the mahogany conference table, flanked by twelve senior board members, four chief corporate lawyers, and security director Thomas Vance.
"Sebastian is acting out of emotional instability," Adrian declared to the board, his voice booming through the room. "He is attempting to cancel the Hart merger over a personal dispute. Under Clause 12 of the Corporate Charter, I am requesting an immediate vote to suspend his executive powers as CEO."
BOOM!
The heavy double oak doors of the boardroom were thrown open with a thunderous, echoing crash.
Stepping into the room, flanked by six armed federal marshals and Senior Special Agent Marcus Vance from the IRS Criminal Investigation Division, was Sebastian Vale.
Walking beside Sebastian, wearing an exquisite tailored charcoal silk suit, holding a leather binder bound by red judicial seals, was Maya Bennett.
The entire boardroom went dead silent.
Adrian Vale jumped out of his leather chair, his face contorting in sudden, sweat-slicked rage. "Sebastian?! What is the meaning of this illegal intrusion?! And why is this girl in my boardroom?!"
Sebastian walked down the length of the thirty-foot mahogany table, stopping two feet from his grandfather. He tossed a thick stack of certified bank records, private investigator logs, and wiretap transcripts flat onto the wood.
"The girl in your boardroom, Grandfather," Sebastian spoke, every word dropped into the quiet room like a slab of cold iron, "is my legally wedded wife, Claire Maya Vale."
The twelve board members gasped, frantically pulling the papers from the table to review the documents.
"Under the original terms of my father's testamentary trust," Sebastian revealed deadpan, "my executive control over fifty-one percent of Vale Global voting equity was activated on the day I married. You concealed our marriage, forged my divorce papers, and intercepted my family's correspondence to maintain control over my father's shares."
Thomas Vance—the security director who had threatened me four years ago—backed toward the door, his face completely drained of color.
"Thomas," Agent Marcus Vance stepped into his path, holding heavy steel handcuffs. "You are under arrest for Criminal Extortion, Forgery, and Accessory to Marital Fraud."
CLICK. CLICK.
Thomas was handcuffed and dragged out of the boardroom in total, public disgrace.
Adrian Vale fell back into his chair, his hands shaking so violently he couldn't hold his pen. "Sebastian... please! I did it for the family! The Hart family held our primary liquidity lines!"
"The Hart family’s liquidity lines were fraudulent, Grandfather," Maya stepped forward, her clear, velvet voice echoing cleanly off the glass walls. "My forensic legal team audited Hart International forty-eight hours ago. They are currently sixty million dollars in default to European creditors."

Adrian stared at me in total, speech-bound horror.
"You thought I was just an insignificant nurse from Queens, Adrian," I spoke softly, looking down at the man who had tried to buy my silence. "You forgot that before nursing school, my father was Chief Financial Inspector for the State of New York."
