Chapter 4 - The Fall at the DrakeThe grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel was a sea of crystal chandeliers, white-linen tables, and three hundred of Chicago’s most prominent billionaires, politicians, and high-society dynasties.

Standing near the main champagne pyramid, wearing a tailored navy suit, holding a glass of vintage wine, was Tyler Vance. Beside him, wearing a silver sequin dress, looking triumphant and smug, stood his fiancée, Vanessa.

Tyler was laughing loudly with two senior bank directors. "I'm telling you, gentlemen, the merger between Vance Logistics and Caldwell Shipping is guaranteed. We're clearing the final debt hurdles tonight."

"Speaking of debt hurdles, Vance," Director Miller remarked, sipping his drink. "Did you see that ridiculous viral video from L’Étoile last night? Some poor waitress got kissed by Vincent DeLuca. People are saying DeLuca’s lost his mind."

Tyler let out a harsh, condescending laugh. "Oh, I was there! The waitress was my ex-girlfriend, Emily. She’s an absolute nobody—a broke, desperate girl who can't even pay her mother's rent. DeLuca probably did it as a joke to ruin my dinner."

BOOM!

The heavy oak double doors at the entrance of the grand ballroom were thrown open with thunderous force.

The ambient chatter in the room didn't just quiet down; it withered instantly into a total, breathless, freezing silence.

Two hundred guests turned their heads simultaneously toward the red carpet.

Walking down the central aisle, flanked by six broad-shouldered DeLuca security operators in dark suits, was Vincent.

And resting on his right arm, her spine straight, her posture royal, her emerald silk dress capturing the light of a hundred crystal chandeliers, her emeralds sparkling like fire, was me.

Tyler’s champagne glass slipped from his fingers. The crystal shattered against the marble floorboards, wine splashing across his polished shoes. CRASH.

His jaw sagged open in complete, horror-stricken shock. His bloodshot eyes bulged out of his head as he stared at the radiant, breathtaking woman he had called "fat" and "impossible to love" twenty-four hours earlier.

Vanessa let out a sharp, pathetic gasp, clutching Tyler's arm so tightly her manicured nails dug through his suit jacket. "What... what is she wearing?! Those are the DeLuca family estate emeralds!"

Vincent didn't hurry. He guided me smoothly through the parting crowd, stopping three feet from Tyler's table.

The silence in the room was so absolute that the patter of the rain against the stained-glass windows sounded like shattering glass.

"Tyler," Vincent spoke. His deep baritone carried effortlessly to every corner of the vast ballroom, cold and sharp as a guillotine blade.

"Mr... Mr. DeLuca!" Tyler stammered, his face draining of all color, sweat instantly beading along his hairline. "Sir... there’s been a massive misunderstanding about last night! I didn't mean any disrespect—"

"You didn't disrespect me, Vance," Vincent interrupted softly, taking my hand and bringing my knuckles to his lips for a slow, reverent kiss. "You disrespected the future Donna of the DeLuca family."
