Chapter 2 - The Contract in the High-RiseThe private express elevator chimed smoothly, opening directly into the soaring marble foyer of the top-floor penthouse at the DeLuca Tower on Lakeshore Drive.

The apartment was vast, elegant, and filled with warm, recessed lighting that illuminated floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the dark expanse of Lake Michigan. High-end art hung along mahogany walls, and a grand stone fireplace crackled softly in the living room.

I stepped onto the thick Persian rug, feeling small and terribly out of place in my scuffed black waitress shoes.

Vincent unbuttoned his dark suit jacket, tossing it casually over the back of a leather armchair. He walked to the marble wet bar, poured two fingers of amber whiskey into a crystal tumbler, and set it down on the glass coffee table before turning to face me.

"Sit down, Emily," he said softly.

I didn't sit. I folded my arms over my chest, my hazel eyes searching his carved jawline. "I need answers, Mr. DeLuca. You kissed me in front of fifty people. You humiliated my ex-boyfriend, but tomorrow morning, my life is going to be a circus. The news... my job at the restaurant—"

"You don't work at L’Étoile anymore," Vincent stated flatly.

My jaw dropped. "What?! I need that paycheck! My mother's medical bills—"

"I purchased L’Étoile twenty minutes ago," Vincent interrupted, his voice calm, even, and absolute. "The owner accepted three times the market value. Your manager has been fired for allowing Vance to harass you, and your mother's medical debt at Northwestern Memorial was paid in full at 8:15 PM."

I froze. The room seemed to tilt beneath my feet.

"You... you paid off her debt...?" I breathed, my knees suddenly feeling like water.

Vincent stepped across the room, stopping directly in front of me. He reached out, his broad, warm hands gently grabbing my wrists, guiding me down to sit on the soft leather sofa before settling into the chair opposite me.

"I didn't do it as charity, Emily," Vincent said, his storm-gray eyes holding mine with an intense, unyielding clarity. "I did it because for six months, I have watched you drown under burdens that were never yours to carry."

He reached into his inner vest pocket, pulling out a sleek leather folder, and placed it flat on the glass table between us.

"What is this?" I asked, my voice trembling.

"A protection and management covenant," Vincent explained cleanly. "Tyler Vance didn't just break your heart, Emily. When he took out those illegal secondary loans under your social security number, he used a front company managed by the Moretti syndicate—my primary rivals in South Chicago."

My blood ran cold. "The mafia...?"

"They were planning to use the debt to force you into signing over your mother's small property in Oak Park," Vincent revealed, every word dropping into the room like a slab of cold granite. "Tonight at the restaurant, Vance wasn't just trying to humiliate you. He was trying to break your spirit so you wouldn't question the legal papers his lawyers were bringing to your apartment tomorrow."

Tears spilled over my lashes, cutting clean tracks through the exhaustion on my face. I buried my face in my hands, a shuddering sob escaping my chest as the sheer weight of Tyler's cruelty crashed over me.

Vincent didn't offer empty platitudes. He stood up, dropped onto one knee flat on the rug before my chair, and gently pulled my hands away from my face, holding them securely in his broad, warm palms.

"He lied to you, Emily," Vincent whispered, his deep baritone shaking with an absolute, terrifying devotion. "He told you that you were ordinary because he knew that if you ever realized how breathtakingly extraordinary you are... you would leave him in the dust."

He opened the leather folder, revealing a single document set beside an heavy, flawless emerald-cut diamond ring.

"Sign the covenant," Vincent commanded softly. "Move into this penthouse. Let my security team protect your mother. And let me show this entire city who you really are."
