Chapter 5 - The Courtroom ShowdownThe federal courthouse in downtown Miami was packed to the gills.

It was Tuesday morning, exactly ten days after Chloe had stumbled onto my doorstep covered in blood and terror. Word of the high-profile scandal had leaked to the national media, turning the arraignment of Victoria and Lewis Dudley into a media circus. Satellite trucks lined the streets, and reporters clamored behind the metal barricades.

Inside the climate-controlled courtroom, the atmosphere was thick with tension.

Victoria Dudley sat at the defense table, wearing an orange jail jumpsuit that clashed horribly with her dyed blonde hair. Her face was gaunt, her eyes hollow, stripped of the arrogant hauteur that had once defined her place in Miami society. Beside her sat Lewis, his broken nose crooked and poorly healed beneath a thick layer of medical tape, staring blankly at the polished mahogany table as if he wished the floor would open up and swallow him whole.

In the gallery, sitting in the front row directly behind the prosecution, were Chloe and I.

Chloe wore a sharp white blazer and dark trousers. She sat tall, her shoulders back, her head held high. The bruises on her face were nearly gone, covered by light makeup, but the quiet strength in her eyes told everyone in that room that the victim who had crawled onto my porch ten days ago was gone forever.

Beside her sat Robert, dressed in a charcoal suit, looking like an immovable monument of justice.

The Honorable Judge Thomas Vance—no relation, much to Victoria’s lingering horror—adjusted his glasses and looked down from the bench with severe disapproval.

“We are here for the formal arraignment and bond hearing in the matter of State of Florida v. Victoria Dudley et al.,” the judge announced, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings. “The charges include aggravated assault, conspiracy to commit extortion, financial fraud, and obstruction of justice.”

The defense attorney—a high-priced criminal specialist who looked visibly sweating through his tailored shirt—stood up immediately. 🌲

“Your Honor, we are moving for a dismissal of the assault charges due to lack of direct physical participation by Mrs. Dudley, and we request a reasonable bond—”

“Denied,” Judge Vance stated flatly, not even letting him finish. “The court has reviewed the photographic evidence, the medical reports detailing forty distinct traumatic strikes, and the intercepted communications between the defendants confirming a premeditated conspiracy to coerce property transfer through physical violence. Furthermore, given the defendants’ active attempts to liquidate hidden assets and flee the jurisdiction, bail is denied.”

A collective gasp rippled through the courtroom gallery.

Victoria let out a sharp, pathetic sob, grabbing her attorney’s sleeve. “No! You can’t do this! Do you know who I am? This is a mistake—!”

“Silence, Mrs. Dudley,” the judge warned sharply, slamming his gavel down with a crack that silenced the room instantly. “You abused your position, you orchestrated a brutal attack on an innocent citizen, and you believed your wealth made you immune to the law. You are remanded to the custody of the Department of Corrections pending trial.”

Gavel down.

Clack.

It was over.

As the bailiffs stepped forward, placing cold steel handcuffs around Victoria’s wrists and pulling Lewis up from his chair, Victoria turned her head desperately toward the gallery.

Her wild, tear-filled eyes locked onto Chloe.

For a fraction of a second, Victoria’s lips parted as if she wanted to scream, to beg, to threaten. But she saw the look on Chloe’s face—not fear, not hatred, but pure, pitying indifference.

And then, she saw Robert Vance leaning back in his seat, his gaze resting on her with cold, clinical satisfaction.

The bailiffs hauled them away through the side doors, out of the courtroom, and straight toward a very long, very dark future.
