Chapter 6 - The Trial and the SentenceOne year after the assault, the final sentencing hearing for Richard and Margaret Whitmore took place before the Connecticut State Superior Court in Hartford.

Richard sat at the defense table wearing a plain beige prison jumpsuit, his hands and ankles bound by steel chains. He was gaunt, his expensive hair thinned out, dark circles under his hollow eyes. Margaret sat beside him, weeping continuously, her arrogant demeanor completely erased by months of jail isolation.

Emily and I walked down the central aisle of the courtroom, flanked by our legal team and Detective Marcus Vance.

Emily wore an exquisite tailored navy silk suit, her head held high, her posture tall, broad, and sovereign.

When she took the witness stand, taking the oath with her right hand raised, Richard looked at her with a desperate, groveling terror.

"Mrs. Whitmore," Prosecutor Rachel Hayes asked, "do you have a statement for the court before sentence is passed?"

Emily looked straight into the eyes of the man who had locked her in a freezing shed, her clear, velvet voice echoing cleanly off the high marble walls.

"One year ago," Emily testified softly, every word dropped with absolute, unbroken truth, "Richard Whitmore told me that without his family, I was nothing. He thought that because I was quiet, I was helpless. Today, I stand here as a survivor, a Director, and a daughter of a man who taught me that true strength never shudders before a bully."

Judge Margaret Vance (no relation) slammed her heavy wooden gavel down with a sharp THWACK.

The sentences were absolute and unyielding:

RICHARD WHITMORE: Convicted of Felony First-Degree Assault, Unlawful Confinement, and Embezzlement. Sentenced to twenty-four years in a state maximum-security facility without the possibility of early parole.

MARGARET WHITMORE: Convicted of Accessory to Felony Assault and Obstruction of Justice. Sentenced to eight years in a state facility.

Richard thrashed in his chains, screaming Emily's name, weeping hysterical pleas as state marshals dragged him down to the dark holding cells below.

Emily walked out of the courtroom into the bright afternoon sunlight, surrounded by news cameras and silver applause, completely, beautifully free.
