Chapter 3 - The Broken VaultThe color drained from Richard’s face so fast he looked like a hollowed-out corpse.

"Search server...?" Richard stammered, his voice cracking into a high, panic-stricken pitch as he jumped up from the sofa. "No! That's my private business office! You have no right!"

"Under Section 8 of your corporate lease, Richard," I stepped forward, my posture tall, unyielding, and sovereign, "the property owner retains immediate right of inspection in the event of active structural damage or felony criminal investigations."

Detective Vance didn't wait. He gestured to his three officers. "Secure the study."

Two officers pushed open the heavy oak doors of the primary study. Behind a large oil painting of Judge Whitmore hung a high-definition digital security terminal that recorded twenty-four-hour closed-circuit footage from every room, hallway, and garden path on the property.

Richard had installed the system six months earlier to monitor Emily's every movement—to track when she left the house, who she called, and where she went.

In his arrogant rush to lock my daughter in the freezing shed, he had completely forgotten that his own cameras were rolling.

Ten minutes later, Detective Vance walked back into the living room holding an encrypted USB flash drive. His face was stone-cold, his eyes burning with absolute, righteous fury.

"Mr. Sterling," Detective Vance spoke, his voice vibrating through the quiet room. "I suggest you look at this file before you speak another word in defense of your client."

The detective plugged the drive into his portable field tablet, angling the screen so everyone in the room could see.

The high-definition night-vision video played clearly:

THE ASSAULT: The footage showed Richard grabbing Emily by her hair in the hallway, striking her repeatedly across the face, and dragging her unconscious body down the stone steps through the freezing rain toward the shed.

THE CONSPIRACY: The audio captured Margaret Whitmore standing by the kitchen island, calmly holding the shed key, telling her son: "Lock her in there until morning. If she freezes a bit, she'll learn not to threaten us with divorce."

Margaret let out a sharp, hysterical shriek, covering her face as she collapsed into an armchair.

Attorney Sterling took one look at the screen, closed his leather briefcase, and stepped three paces away from Richard. "I am withdrawing as defense counsel for Mr. Whitmore immediately due to irreconcilable ethical conflicts."

"Arthur! No! You can't leave me!" Richard screamed, his voice turning into a pathetic, groveling whine.

Detective Vance pulled heavy steel handcuffs from his belt, stepping up behind Richard.

"Richard Whitmore," Detective Vance declared. "You are under arrest for Felony First-Degree Assault, Unlawful Confinement, Depraved Indifference, and Domestic Abuse."
