Chapter 5 - The Fortress on the HudsonThe Spedaro-Kane estate—commonly referred to simply as the Kane Manor—sat on a sprawling, heavily guarded promontory overlooking the Hudson River twenty miles north of Manhattan. Surrounded by ten-foot wrought-iron security fences, dense perimeter forests, and monitored by thermal-imaging cameras, the fortress-like property was designed to withstand a small military invasion.

As the armored Mercedes rolled through the grand stone gates, the tension in the car finally began to dissipate.
Noah had fallen back asleep in the back seat, exhausted from the terror of the underground garage. I sat quietly in the front passenger seat, staring out the window at the grand, gothic-style stone mansion as we pulled up to the circular driveway.
Adrian parked the car in front of the massive double oak doors, cut the engine, but didn't immediately get out. He sat gripping the steering wheel, his knuckles white.
“I’m sorry,” Adrian said quietly, breaking the heavy silence in the cabin.
I turned my head to look at him. “For what? Saving our lives?”
“For dragging you into this world,” Adrian sighed, running a hand through his dark hair. “When I hired you two years ago, I intended to keep my professional life and my private life locked in separate boxes. I thought if I kept you at arm’s length, you’d be safe from the targets painted on my back.”
“You didn't drag me anywhere, Adrian,” I replied, my voice steady and surprisingly firm. “I chose to stay in that office. I chose to get in the car. And I chose to protect your son today.”
Adrian turned his head, his gray-blue eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that felt like a physical touch. Slowly, deliberately, he reached across the console and placed his warm, calloused hand over mine.
“Why?” he asked softly. “Why stay? Every other secretary I’ve ever hired lasted three months max before running away terrified. You stayed for two years, and today you risked your life to shield Noah.”
My heart hammered against my ribs, not from fear, but from the unbearable closeness between us. “Because beneath the cold mafia boss persona, Adrian Kane is a good father. And Noah... Noah deserves to be protected.”
Adrian’s thumb brushed lightly over the back of my hand. A quiet, raw emotion flickered in his eyes—something tender and profound that he had kept locked away behind iron gates for years.

Before either of us could speak, the heavy car door opened on the driver’s side, and Marcus leaned in. “Boss, the perimeter is secure. The head housekeeper has a room prepared for Miss Elena on the second floor, right next to the master suite.”
Adrian cleared his throat, breaking the spell, though he didn't immediately let go of my hand. “Good. Get Noah upstairs and put him to bed.”
