Chapter 3 - The Doctor’s Verdict and the Counter-StrikeThe morning sun streamed through the sheer silk curtains of the Manhattan townhouse, casting a warm golden glow across the antique Persian rug.

Dr. Evans, a distinguished obstetrician with kind eyes and silver hair, packed his stethoscope into his leather bag after finishing a thorough ultrasound examination.
He looked up from the portable monitor, smiling warmly at me as I pulled my sweater down over my stomach.
—Well, Mrs. Whitmore, I have wonderful news. The babies are developing exceptionally well. Heartbeats are strong, rhythmic, and robust. However, carrying triplets is no small physical feat, especially given the high levels of emotional stress you’ve endured lately. You need absolute rest, pristine nutrition, and zero exposure to toxic environments.
—Thank you, Dr. Evans, —I said, feeling a profound wave of relief wash over me. —I will follow your instructions to the letter.
When Dr. Evans stepped out, Julian walked into the bedroom, accompanied by Arthur Vance, the sharp-suited attorney he had promised the night before.
Arthur placed a thick leather briefcase on the coffee table, opening it to reveal crisp financial portfolios and legal documents.
—Good morning, Mrs. Whitmore, —Arthur greeted me professionally, adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses. —Mr. Sterling has briefed me on your situation. We have drafted a comprehensive legal strategy.
—Let's hear it, Arthur, —I said, sitting gracefully on the edge of the sofa.
—First, regarding the divorce: we are rejecting Raymond’s abandonment settlement entirely. Instead of a quiet, no-fault separation, we are filing an immediate countersuit for spousal abandonment, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and fraudulent dissipation of marital assets during your marriage.
I frowned slightly.
—Fraudulent dissipation? What do you mean?
Arthur smiled, sliding a set of bank statements across the table.
—For the past eighteen months, while Raymond was telling you that Whitmore Development was struggling and forcing you to live on a strict household budget, he was secretly funneling over two million dollars into offshore accounts and purchasing luxury assets for his new mistress—who happens to be Victoria Vance, the daughter of his primary financial backer.
My breath hitched. Victoria Vance. The woman in the cream silk dress sitting at my kitchen table, pouring wine from my cabinet while Margaret smiled her silent, approving smile.
—Margaret knew, —I whispered, the pieces clicking together with devastating clarity. —Margaret orchestrated the whole thing. Victoria’s family was injecting capital into Raymond’s failing projects in exchange for a merger of bloodlines. I was just an expired contract that needed to be terminated.
—Precisely, —Arthur nodded. —And that brings us to our masterstroke. Under Connecticut law, pregnant spouses undergoing contested divorce proceedings are entitled to emergency temporary alimony, complete occupancy of the marital estate, and full disclosure of all corporate holdings.
Julian leaned forward, resting his hands on his cane.
—Which means, Clara, that by tomorrow afternoon, my legal team will slap Raymond with an emergency injunction freezing all corporate accounts, locking him out of the Greenwich mansion, and demanding immediate financial disclosure.
I looked down at the legal papers, feeling a cold, empowering thrill race through my veins.

The woman who had stood outside those iron gates crying in the freezing wind was gone. In her place stood a mother armed with the law, backed by a billionaire patriarch, and carrying three secret heirs to the very family that tried to erase her.
—Let’s serve him, —I said firmly. —Let’s see how fast Raymond smiles when he realizes he just locked his executioner out of the house.
