Chapter 6 - The Return to ChicagoSix months after the trial, the spring sun broke brightly over the gold-leafed gates of the Harden Estate in Lincoln Park, overlooking Lake Michigan.

The fifty-acre oceanfront property—a grand stone mansion surrounded by ancient oak trees, blooming white hydrangeas, and wide sunlit lawns—had been completely renovated.
The cold, arrogant atmosphere that had hung over the house during Eleanor’s reign was completely gone, replaced by light, fresh air, and the joyful sound of eight-year-old twin girls running through the halls with their golden retriever puppy.
On a warm, clear afternoon in late May, the stone terrace overlooking the blue lake was decorated with hundreds of soft pink roses and white silk banners for Betty and Mia’s ninth birthday party.
Fifty children from their new school, along with family friends and security staff, filled the lawn, laughing and playing games near the garden fountain.
I sat at a white wooden table on the terrace wearing an elegant cream silk dress, my dark hair styled in soft waves, drinking a glass of sparkling lemonade.
Footsteps sounded softly on the stone patio floor behind me.
Daniel walked out into the warm sunlight wearing a comfortable linen shirt and dark trousers.
He carried a wide silver tray holding a massive chocolate birthday cake covered in rich pink buttercream frosting and nine flickering wax candles.
He set the tray flat on the table, leaning down behind my chair, wrapping his broad arms around my shoulders, pressing a soft, sweet kiss into my hair.
"How are the Q2 foundation reports looking, Chairman Bennett?" Daniel teased warmly, resting his cheek against mine.
"Flawless, Mr. Harden," I smiled back, turning my head to look into his slate-gray eyes. "The Rachel Bennett Single-Mother Assistance Trust just funded fifty new housing grants across Illinois this month alone."
Daniel let out a low, genuine laugh—a sound that filled my entire soul with weightless, absolute joy—and ran his fingers softly through my hair.
He reached into his pocket, pulled out a small velvet box, and set it gently beside my lemonade glass.
I opened the box under the warm sunlight.
Inside rested a breathtaking six-carat flawless solitaire diamond ring—a promise carved in liquid silver and light.

"No more midnight spreadsheets in secret, Rachel," Daniel whispered softly, looking deep into my eyes with an intensity that made my heart leap against my ribs. "Marry me. Let me love you out in the open for the rest of our lives."
Tears of pure, unadulterated happiness welling in my eyes, I turned in my seat, wrapping my arms tightly around his neck, pulling his lips down to mine in a deep, sweet, consuming kiss that sealed our promise under the open sky.
