Chapter 4 - The Sanctuary in DenverTwo weeks passed like a quiet, miraculous dream.

The public scandal surrounding the canceled Aspen wedding detonated across Wall Street and national media outlets: TECH BILLIONAIRE DANIEL HARDEN CANCELS $5M WEDDING AFTER DISCOVERING SECRET EIGHT-YEAR-OLD TWINS.
However, while the press went wild outside the Harden headquarters in Chicago, inside my modest three-bedroom bungalow in Denver, the world was completely peaceful, warm, and sunlit.
Daniel had moved into a luxury hotel four blocks from my house, refusing to press his way into our lives, choosing instead to earn his place second by second, day by day.
Every morning at 7:30 AM, his sleek black sedan would park quietly outside our kitchen window.
He didn't arrive with bodyguards or corporate lawyers. He arrived wearing a simple cashmere sweater and jeans, carrying fresh pastries from the local bakery and two boxes of organic strawberry cereal—the exact cereal Betty and Mia had been arguing over the morning the raffle invitation arrived.
I sat at the kitchen island, drinking fresh coffee, watching through the archway as Daniel sat on the living room rug with our daughters.
Mia sat on his shoulders, giggling hysterically as he pretended to be a giant horse, while Betty sat beside him, carefully showing him her third-grade math workbook.
"Dad?" Betty asked, her small voice carrying clearly into the kitchen.
Daniel stopped moving instantly, his broad frame freezing, his gray eyes widening as he looked down at his daughter with pure, overwhelming awe.
It was the first time she had called him Dad.
"Yes, sweet pea?" Daniel whispered, his baritone thick with raw, unreserved emotion.
"Why didn't you come to our fifth birthday party?" Betty asked innocently, holding up her pencil. "Mom made a chocolate cake with pink sprinkles, but there were only three chairs at the table."
I froze in the kitchen, my hand tightening around my coffee mug, my breath catching in my throat as eight years of quiet pain surfaced in the room.
Daniel looked at Betty, then turned his head slowly to look at me standing in the kitchen archway.
He didn't lie. He didn't make up a corporate excuse. He looked straight into his daughter's storm-gray eyes—the eyes he had given her—and accepted the full, heavy weight of the lost time.
"Because I was lost, Betty," Daniel confessed softly, his hand coming up to gently rest against her cheek. "I was trapped in a dark place, and I didn't know where to find the two most precious girls in the world. But now that I've found you... I am never, ever going to miss another birthday cake again."

Mia slid down off his shoulders, wrapping her small arms tightly around his neck, while Betty leaned her head against his chest.
Tears spilled silently down my cheeks as I watched the man I loved wrap his broad arms around our daughters, holding them as if they were the only two things that mattered in the entire universe.
