Chapter 7 - Sunrise on the Horizon

Six months later, the private balcony of my penthouse apartment overlooking the Chicago lakefront was bathed in the warm, golden light of a crisp spring morning.

The city stretched out beneath me—vibrant, beautiful, and entirely free.

Vance Holdings had been restructured from the ground up, its corrupt legacy dismantled and its assets redirected into a global philanthropic foundation dedicated to funding digital literacy and legal protection programs for orphaned youth and domestic trafficking survivors. Julian was currently serving a fifteen-year federal sentence in a medium-security correctional facility in Indiana, while Evelyn lived out her remaining years in a quiet, secluded medical facility upstate, completely stripped of her influence and her wealth.

They had tried to bury an orphan girl in a foreign country, believing she had no one to fight for her.

They hadn't realized that the most dangerous person in the world is someone who has nothing left to lose, and everything left to build.

The glass sliding door behind me clicked open. Footsteps padded softly across the polished oak flooring, and a pair of warm, strong arms wrapped gently around my waist from behind.

I leaned back against Marcus’s chest, resting my hands over his, feeling the steady, peaceful rhythm of his heartbeat.

“Coffee’s getting cold,” Marcus murmured, pressing a soft kiss to the top of my head. “And you’ve got a board meeting with the new foundation directors in an hour. Are you ready?”

I turned around in his arms, looking up into his warm, steady eyes with a bright, genuine smile that reached all the way to my soul.

I looked down past the balcony rail, watching the sunlight dance across the deep blue waters of Lake Michigan, vast and open and entirely unmapped.

“I was born ready,” I said softly.
