Chapter 5 - The Boardroom Ambush

The fifty-second floor of the Vance Holdings Tower in downtown Chicago was a monument to corporate arrogance. Its walls were paneled in rare Brazilian rosewood, its floors paved with imported Italian marble, and its floor-to-ceiling windows offered a panoramic view of Lake Michigan choked in gray autumn fog.
Inside the executive boardroom, the atmosphere was thick with sulfur and panic.
Julian Vance stood at the head of the long mahogany conference table, his usually immaculate hair disheveled, his silk tie pulled loose at the collar, and his face pale with cold sweat. Surrounding him were three senior vice presidents and corporate legal counsel, all shouting over each other as red alerts flashed across their laptops and tablets.
“What do you mean the liquidity lines are frozen?!” Julian roared, slamming his fist down onto the mahogany table so hard a crystal water pitcher rattled. “Call the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi again! Tell them our family name alone is collateral enough for a fifty-million-dollar emergency bridge loan!”
“Sir, we’ve tried!” the chief financial officer stammered, his fingers flying frantically across his keyboard. “It’s not just Tokyo. Every major institutional lender across North America and East Asia has flagged our corporate EIN. Someone—some entity with Tier-1 cryptographic clearance—has executed a hostile asset seizure across our primary subsidiaries. Our stock has plummeted thirty-two percent in forty-eight hours!”
Julian dragged a trembling hand down his face, panting for breath. “Who? Who has that kind of leverage? Is it the Milano syndicate? Are we under a hostile takeover?”
Before anyone could answer, the heavy double doors at the end of the boardroom slowly swung open.
The loud arguing instantly died down. Every head at the table snapped toward the entrance, expecting federal agents or a board-appointed receiver.
Instead, a lone woman stepped across the threshold.
She wore an obsidian-black tailored pantsuit, her platinum-blonde hair styled in a sleek, commanding chignon, oversized sunglasses hiding her eyes. She walked with the unhurried, rhythmic stride of an apex predator entering its natural hunting ground.
Julian froze, his jaw slackening, color completely draining from his face as if he were staring down the barrel of a ghost.
“T-Thao...?” he whispered, his voice cracking into a pathetic squeak. “How... how are you here? You were in Phuket! You didn't even have a passport!”
I stopped at the opposite end of the mahogany table, resting both hands lightly on the polished wood, leaning forward just enough to project absolute, unshakeable dominance.
“Did you really think a passport was the only thing keeping me tied to you, Julian?” I asked, my voice carrying a smooth, razor-sharp cadence that echoed off the rosewood walls.
Julian stumbled backward, gripping the back of his leather executive chair for support, his eyes darting frantically toward the door as if expecting security guards to materialize. “You... you’re insane! You ruined everything! You’ve destroyed Vance Holdings!”
“No, Julian,” I corrected coldly, lifting my chin and sliding my sunglasses down the bridge of my nose, revealing eyes that burned with arctic fury. “I didn't destroy Vance Holdings. I simply stopped subsidizing your family's criminal enterprise with my silence.”
With a flick of my wrist, I tossed a thick, leather-bound portfolio across the mahogany table. It slid smoothly across the polished surface, coming to a halt directly against Julian’s trembling hands.
“What... what is this?” he choked out, staring down at the embossed gold lettering: ARCHIMEDES PROTOCOL: ASSET RECOVERY & INDICTMENT DOSSIER.
“That,” I replied softly, “is a complete, legally certified forensic audit of every off-the-books shipping container, every laundered wire transfer, and every fraudulent real estate conveyance your mother authorized over the last ten years. Copies of this exact dossier were securely transmitted to the Department of Justice, the Securities and Exchange Commission, and every major financial news outlet in North America exactly three minutes before I walked through those front doors.”
The chief financial officer gasped, grabbing his chest, while the legal counsel slumped back in his chair with a defeated groan.
Julian’s face mottled from pale white to a furious, apoplectic crimson. With a guttural roar of pure, unadulterated rage, he lunged across the table, his fingers clawing wildly toward my throat.
“You bitch!” he screamed. “I’ll kill you myself!”
He didn't even take two steps.
Before Julian’s hands could reach the edge of the table, the boardroom doors slammed open again with deafening force. Viktor Vance—along with two armed private security contractors—stormed into the room, their tasers drawn and locked dead onto Julian’s chest.
Except they weren't Julian’s men anymore.
Viktor stopped directly behind my shoulder, snapped to attention, and gave me a crisp, respectful nod.
“Order confirmed, Mrs. Vance,” Viktor said, his deep voice ringing through the silent room. “The corporate enforcers have secured the perimeter. Vance Holdings is officially under receivership.”

Julian froze, staring in utter disbelief at his own cousin and head of security. “Viktor?! Have you lost your mind?! She’s an outsider! She’s nobody!”
“She’s the majority voting shareholder of this corporation as of fourteen minutes ago, Julian,” Viktor replied coldly, stepping forward and clamping a heavy pair of steel zip-ties around Julian’s wrists before shoving him face-down onto the mahogany table. “And you’re under citizen’s arrest for corporate fraud, kidnapping, and embezzlement.”
