Chapter 7 - The Sovereign FutureOne year later, the spring sun shone brilliantly over Millennium Park, casting a warm golden glow across the Chicago skyline.

I stood on the private wrap-around terrace of our penthouse—our penthouse—wearing a light cashmere sweater, holding a cup of fresh coffee while watching the morning commuters rush past far below.

The corporate world looked very different now. Sterling-Vance had been broken up by federal regulators following the exposure of their industrial espionage campaign, and Reed Global Infrastructure was stronger, more ethical, and more profitable than it had ever been in its history.

As chief strategy officer, I no longer sat in a cubicle waiting for my work to be critiqued by the Ice King. I sat at the head of the table right beside him, an equal partner in every sense of the word.

Footsteps sounded softly behind me on the wooden decking.

Strong arms wrapped around my waist from behind, and a familiar chin rested gently on my shoulder.

"You're up early," Graham murmured, pressing a warm kiss against the crook of my neck.

"I have a board meeting at nine," I smiled, leaning back against his chest and resting my hands over his arms. "And unlike last year, I actually intend to run it without getting dragged into an international corporate conspiracy."

Graham chuckled, a rich, genuine sound that still gave me butterflies. He reached up, gently twisting the heavy platinum band on my left hand—the very same ring he had placed on my finger in a haze of Vegas adrenaline and sheer terror twelve months ago.

"Sterling is out of prison on appeal," Graham noted casually, though his grip tightened slightly around my waist. "His lawyers tried to file a motion challenging the validity of our emergency spousal agreement last week."

I turned around in his arms, wrapping my arms around his neck and looking up into his dark, amused eyes.

"And what did our corporate counsel say?"

"Our corporate counsel," Graham smiled, leaning down to press his forehead against mine, "informed Sterling’s lawyers that after a year of audited financial performance, successful corporate restructuring, and overwhelming domestic harmony, any court in the country would recognize that our marriage is the most ironclad asset Reed Global has ever acquired."

"An asset, huh?" I raised an eyebrow playfully.

"The only asset," Graham whispered, his voice dropping into that familiar, intoxicating register that made the rest of the world fade away, "that actually matters."

He captured my lips in a slow, deeply possessive kiss that tasted of morning coffee and forever.

The ice king of Chicago had long since melted, leaving behind a man who had built an empire, only to discover that the only thing worth fighting for was the woman who had helped him save it.
