Chapter 2 - The Pawn and the BoardroomThe private corporate jet touched down at O'Hare International Airport under a gray, spitting Chicago sky that matched the storm brewing inside my head.

During the three-hour flight from Vegas, Graham hadn't spoken a single word about our supposed marriage. He had spent the entire journey locked behind his laptop, reviewing encrypted financial ledgers, barking hushed directives into his satellite phone, and treating me not like his newly minted wife, but like a vital, high-security asset that required constant protection.
Yet every time I caught him looking at me, his gaze lingered just a fraction too long on the platinum band resting against my finger.
When the Gulfstream’s cabin door opened, a pair of black armored Lincoln Navigators waited on the tarmac directly beneath the wing. Graham’s chief of security, a towering ex-marine named Vance, escorted us silently into the backseat of the lead vehicle.
"The emergency board meeting is set for 10:00 AM at the headquarters tower," Vance announced from the front seat as the SUV merged onto the Kennedy Expressway. "Mr. Sterling has already arrived on-site with his legal team. They’re claiming the Southwest Transit acquisition is void due to a conflict of interest involving an executive romance."
I turned my head sharply toward Graham. "An executive romance? They already know?"
"They know something," Graham replied grimly, staring out the window at the gray Chicago skyline. "Someone inside our inner circle leaked photos of us leaving the rooftop restaurant in Vegas. Sterling is going to use our marriage as leverage to prove market manipulation."
"And what happens to me?" I asked, my voice tight with a mixture of fear and simmering rage. "Do I get thrown under the bus as the ambitious employee who trapped the CEO?"
Graham turned slowly, his icy demeanor melting away just enough to reveal a sharp, unyielding resolve. He reached across the center console and placed his hand firmly over mine. His palm was warm, calloused, and surprisingly steady.
"Nobody is throwing you anywhere, Avery," he said, his voice dropping into a low, uncompromising register. "You are my wife now. In the eyes of the law, the board, and every corporate predator in this city. They want to play dirty? We’ll show them how an empire is actually defended."
The SUV pulled into the subterranean parking garage of Reed Global Infrastructure twenty minutes later. Flashbulbs popped from behind concrete pillars as paparazzi and corporate bloggers—tipped off by leaks inside the PR department—rushed the vehicle the moment our doors unlocked.
Vance and two other security guards formed an impenetrable human shield around us, pushing back the wall of reporters shouting questions.
"Mr. Reed! Is it true you married your financial analyst to bypass SEC regulations?"
"Ms. Lane, did you orchestrate a hostile takeover from the master suite?"
Graham kept his arm securely locked around my waist, pulling me tight against his side as we cut through the flashing lights and entered the private executive elevator. The heavy steel doors slid shut, instantly cutting off the chaos of the garage.

I looked up at him, breathless and shaking. "That was just the warm-up."
Graham pressed the button for the forty-eighth floor, his jaw set like granite. "Let them bark. Today, we take the board back."
