Chapter 4 - The Boardroom CoupWhile Julian was being detained by Spanish corporate counsel and local authorities at Barajas Airport, the real war was being fought across nine time zones in the executive boardroom on the forty-fifth floor of Mercer Global Tower in Manhattan.

I didn't stay in Spain. After completing my return flight rotation back to JFK forty-eight hours later, I walked straight off the aircraft, changed into my charcoal-gray St. John pantsuit in the crew locker room, and took a private town car directly to Wall Street.

When I pushed open the double doors of the executive boardroom, the three independent board members—Arthur Vance, Sarah Jenkins, and Marcus Thorne—looked up from their tablets.

“Claire,” Arthur said, standing up and offering me the head chair at the mahogany table. “You look like you haven't slept in three days.”

“I’ll sleep when the audit is complete,” I replied, taking my seat and sliding my leather briefcase onto the table. “Status report?”

Sarah Jenkins, our senior financial director, adjusted her glasses and tapped her screen. “We’ve executed a full lock on all domestic and international operating accounts tied to Julian’s executive ID. His corporate credit cards have been blacklisted, his company vehicle has been repossessed, and we’ve frozen the primary trust accounts holding his personal equity stakes.”

“And Apex Holdings?” I asked.

“Dismantled,” Marcus Thorne chimed in, a satisfied smirk crossing his face. “We subpoenaed the bank records for Chloe Vance’s shell company. Turns out Julian wasn't just funding her lifestyle—he was using Apex to siphon venture capital away from our upcoming European logistics expansion project to cover his personal gambling debts.”

I leaned back in my chair, resting my hands flat on the conference table. The pieces of the puzzle were finally snapping into place. For months, I had wondered why our expansion into the Iberian shipping market had faced such mysterious capital delays. Julian hadn't been investing in our growth; he had been bleeding the company dry to fund his secret double life and bail himself out of high-stakes financial liabilities.

“What’s his current status?” I asked.

“He’s still stranded in Madrid,” Arthur replied, opening a secure folder. “His passport has been flagged by local commercial authorities due to the international fraud injunction we filed. Chloe Vance has already hired her own separate criminal defense attorney and is cooperating fully with our forensic team in exchange for immunity from direct prosecution.”

I had to suppress a cold laugh. Loyalty among thieves was a fragile commodity indeed. The moment the ship started sinking, Chloe had thrown Julian overboard without a second thought.

“Draft the permanent restructuring resolution,” I instructed, my voice ringing with absolute authority. “I want Julian’s sixty percent voting shares reallocated into the corporate treasury under Section 9.4 due to proven fiduciary malfeasance. That will give me absolute majority control of Mercer Global, with Arthur and the board retaining supervisory oversight.”

“Consider it done, Chairwoman,” Arthur said, his eyes gleaming with professional respect.

For eight years, Julian had relegated me to the background, treating me like an accessory to his success rather than the architect of it. He had assumed my decade in aviation was just a charming hobby to keep me occupied while he played the corporate titan.

Now, the corporation bore my name in truth as well as spirit. And Julian was about to learn what happens when you bite the hand that built you.
