Chapter 5 - The Intrusion of the DynastyEleanor Carter stopped at their table, her gaze sweeping over Ryan’s rumpled shirt, his unshaven jaw, and the exhausted, pale woman sitting across from him. The disgust in her eyes was palpable.

“Ryan,” Eleanor said, her voice dripping with aristocratic ice. “Your administrative assistant has been in absolute hysterics for three days. You missed a multi-million-dollar board acquisition meeting, your phone has been disconnected from the corporate network, and rumor has it across downtown financial circles that you’ve barricaded yourself inside a charitable children's hospital with your destitute ex-wife.”
Ryan stood up slowly, towering over his mother. The deference he had instinctively shown her his entire life was completely gone, burned away by the fires of the past week.
“Keep your voice down, Mother,” Ryan warned, his tone dangerously low.
“Don't you dare use that tone with me,” Eleanor hissed, stepping closer. She cast a scathing look toward Grace. “And as for you, young woman—I don't know what kind of paternity scam you’re pulling with these children to trap my son back into a misguided alimony settlement, but—"
“They are my children!” Ryan roared, the shout echoing off the tile walls of the cafeteria, causing the few remaining nurses and visitors to turn sharply in their direction.
Eleanor froze, her mouth slightly open. “What did you say?”
“You heard me,” Ryan said, stepping between his mother and Grace like a shield. “Leo, Chloe, and Maya are my flesh and blood. Three grandchildren you never bothered to ask about because you were too busy trying to engineer my life into a corporate brochure. They are sick, Mother. Maya is fighting for her life upstairs. And if you ever—ever—walk into this hospital again and speak one word of disrespect to their mother, I will strip you of every single voting share you hold in Carter Enterprises before the sun sets tonight.”
Eleanor stared at her son, her face draining of color. For the first time in her life, she realized that Ryan was no longer the obedient, pliable instrument of her ambition. He was a father fighting for his pack.
Without another word, Eleanor turned on her heel and marched out of the cafeteria, her head held high, though her hands trembled as she clutched her designer handbag.
Grace sat frozen, staring up at Ryan in stunned silence. A slow, heavy tear slid down her cheek, but this time, it wasn't a tear of despair.
“You... you stood up to her,” Grace whispered. “You actually stood up to her.”
May you like
“I should have done it ten years ago,” Ryan said softly, pulling out his chair and sitting back down, reaching across the table to take her hand. This time, she didn't pull away.
The next morning, the laboratory results arrived. Ryan was an exact human leukocyte antigen match for Maya.
