Chapter 4 - The Purge on the 40th FloorAt 2:00 PM, the grand executive boardroom on the fortieth floor of the Calloway Building on Michigan Avenue was filled to capacity.

Twelve senior board members, three corporate litigators, and my mother—Victoria Calloway—sat around the thirty-foot mahogany table beneath crystal chandeliers.
Victoria wore an immaculate ivory Chanel suit, her diamond necklace catching the light, her silver hair styled into an unbroken crown. She held a gold pen, a triumphant, cold smile playing on her lips as she addressed the board.
"As you all know," Victoria announced smoothly, her voice dripping with aristocratic charm, "my son Preston has suffered a temporary lapse in personal judgment, abandoning a six-hundred-million-dollar Gold Coast acquisition this morning without board approval. Under Section 4 of the Calloway Heritage Charter, I am moving to temporarily suspend his executive voting power—"
BOOM!
The heavy double oak doors of the boardroom were thrown open with a violent, hydraulic crash!
Walking down the central aisle, flanked by Chief Prosecutor Marcus Vance and Attorney Martin Hayes, was me.
I wore a fresh charcoal bespoke suit, my dark hair slicked back, my posture radiating an unshakeable, sovereign authority that dropped the room's temperature to absolute zero.
And walking right beside Martin Hayes was Frank—the sixty-two-year-old baker from the South Side bakery—holding a leather file containing forty years of land registry records.
Victoria’s gold pen slipped from her fingers, clattering flat against the mahogany table. Her face went paper-white.
"Preston...!" Victoria stammered, standing up from her leather chair. "What is the meaning of this intrusion?! This is a closed board meeting!"
"The meeting is open, Mother," I stated flatly, my baritone carrying cleanly across the silent room. "And you are no longer on the board."
Martin Hayes stepped forward, tapping a tablet screen that projected high-definition banking ledgers, forged land titles, and medical records onto the boardroom's forty-foot video displays:
THE FRAUD OF 2021: Certified forensic audits proving Victoria Calloway forged Naomi Vance's signature to illegally acquire thirty acres of South Side lakefront property valued at $85 million.
THE INSURANCE EMBEZZLEMENT: Wire logs establishing that Victoria funneled $12 million from my late father's life insurance payout into an offshore account in the Cayman Islands under her sister's name.
THE CONSPIRACY TO EXTORT: Intercepted legal letters proving Victoria paid three hundred thousand dollars to your former divorce law firm to withhold medical notifications of Naomi's pregnancy.
The twelve board members stood up in collective, horrified outrage, staring at Victoria as if she were a venomous snake sitting at the table.
"THIS IS A LIE!" Victoria shrieked, her voice turning shrill, her aristocratic mask shattering into ugly, panicked pieces. "I BUILT THIS COMPANY! I PROTECTED OUR FAMILY NAME FROM THAT DIRT-POOR SCHOOLTEACHER!"
"That schoolteacher is the mother of my twin sons, Victoria," I said smoothly, stepping two inches from her face, looking down at her with an absolute, weightless disgust. "The legal heirs to every single dollar you tried to steal."
Lead Marshal Miller stepped forward from the doorway, holding heavy steel handcuffs.
"Victoria Calloway," Marshal Miller declared coldly. "You are under arrest for Grand Larceny, Systemic Wire Fraud, and Forgery."

The cold steel cuffs locked tightly around Victoria’s wrists behind her back. She thrashed and shrieked hysterical, groveling pleas as federal marshals dragged her out of the Calloway Building in total, public disgrace, surrounded by news cameras capturing her downfall for the evening news.
