Chapter 6 - The Gift of TomorrowTuesday morning arrived with a clear, brilliant blue sky over Chicago.

The pediatric surgical suite on the sixth floor of Saint Jude’s was warm, quiet, and filled with state-of-the-art medical equipment.

I lay on the secondary hospital bed, wearing a blue surgical gown, holding Grace's hand tightly as the anesthesiologist prepared the intravenous line for the stem-cell harvesting procedure.

In the adjacent bed lay little Clara, holding a plush brown bear I had bought her from the hospital gift shop, a brave, beautiful smile lighting up her small face.

"Are you scared, Daddy?" Clara asked softly, her small voice sweet and clear.

It was the first time she had called me Daddy.

The word echoed in my chest like a symphony, bringing hot, happy tears to my eyes.

"I'm not scared at all, sweetheart," I smiled, leaning over to kiss her forehead. "Daddy's just going to give you a little piece of his magic so you can run around in the park with Leo and Nora."

"Will we go to the park together?" Leo asked from the armchair near the window, where he was sitting beside his sister Nora, holding a brand-new set of colored pencils.

"We're going to the park every single weekend, Leo," I promised, looking up at Grace, whose eyes were shining with radiant, tearful happiness. "We're going to buy a big house with a huge backyard, a tire swing, and a garden where your mom can paint all day."

Grace squeezed my hand, leaning down to press a soft, lingering kiss against my lips—a kiss filled with forgiveness, healing, and absolute trust.

"I love you, Ryan," she whispered against my mouth.

"I love you, Grace," I swore into the quiet room. "More than life itself."

The anesthesiologist offered a warm, reassuring smile. "Alright, Mr. Vance. Count down from ten for me."

I closed my eyes, holding Grace's hand, feeling the warm, soothing medicine enter my veins, knowing that for the first time in my life, I was doing something that truly mattered.
