Chapter 4 - The Confrontation in the PenthouseBy 9:00 PM, Clara had fallen into a deep, peaceful sleep under the influence of her mild pain medication. Leo and Nora were asleep on the small sofa in the corner of the private pediatric suite, wrapped in warm fleece blankets I had ordered from the hospital VIP concierge.

Grace stood near the window, looking out at the city lights reflecting off the wet pavement below.

I walked over softly, setting a warm cup of herbal tea on the table beside her.

"The lab results came back," I murmured gently.

Grace turned her head, her eyes wide with desperate anticipation. "And?"

"I'm a ninety-nine percent HLA tissue match," I said, a genuine, tearful smile breaking across my face for the first time all day. "I'm a perfect donor for her stem cell transplant. Dr. Harrison said we can schedule the procedure for next Tuesday."

Grace let out a long, shuddering gasp. Her hands flew to her mouth, and her knees buckled under the sudden, crushing weight of relief.

Before she could hit the floor, I stepped forward, catching her firmly in my arms.

She didn't push me away this time. She collapsed against my chest, her fingers clutching the lapels of my wet coat, and sobbed uncontrollably into my shoulder. I wrapped my arms tightly around her, burying my face in her soft, damp hair, holding her close against my heart.

"I'm so sorry, Grace," I wept softly into her hair, holding her as if she were the most precious thing in the universe. "I'm so sorry I wasn't here. I'm so sorry I let my family hurt you. I swear to you on my life, no one will ever touch you or our children again."

"I was so scared, Ryan," she sobbed, her small body trembling in my embrace. "Every time the medical bills came, every time Clara had a fever... I thought I was going to lose her. I thought I was failing them."

"You didn't fail them, Grace," I whispered fiercely, kissing the top of her head. "You're the strongest, most incredible woman I have ever known. You saved them. Now let me protect you."

We stood there in the quiet hospital room for a long time, holding each other, letting three years of pain, grief, and unspoken love melt away in the warm light.

BANG.

The heavy double doors of the private pediatric suite were suddenly pushed open.

Standing in the threshold, wearing a three-thousand-dollar mink coat, holding an ivory walking cane, was my mother, Eleanor Vance. Beside her were two of Vance Enterprises' primary corporate attorneys.

Eleanor's sharp, aristocratic eyes swept across the room—taking in the sight of me holding Grace, the private suite, and the three sleeping children. Her face hardened into a mask of pure, unadulterated coldness.

"Ryan," Eleanor said, her sharp voice cutting through the room like a steel whip. "What is the meaning of this spectacle? Amelia's father called me an hour ago in hysterics. You abandoned your own engagement dinner for this... this woman?"

Grace instantly stiffened in my arms, attempting to pull back, her old fears flaring up like a struck match.

I didn't let her go. I held Grace firmly by my side, turning around to face my mother, stepping between her and the sleeping children.

"Get out, Eleanor," I said, my voice dropping into a low, lethal baritone that made her two attorneys take an immediate step back into the hallway.

Eleanor's dark eyebrows pulled together in disbelief. "How dare you speak to your mother in that tone! I came here to protect this family's reputation! If these children are yours, we will handle the custody arrangements through proper legal channels, but I will not allow you to ruin our corporate standing over an illegitimate—"

"Say that word," I interrupted, taking one slow, heavy step toward her, my fists clenching at my sides, "say that word in front of my children, and I will have Marcus throw you off this property."

Eleanor froze, her face draining of color as she looked into my eyes. For the first time in thirty-eight years, she saw something in her son that terrified her: a man who had completely freed himself from her control.
