Chapter 2 - The Audit of the Hidden HeirBy 2:00 AM, the top floor penthouse suite at The Moretti Tower on Fifth Avenue was locked down under absolute security.

Outside the private elevator banks, twenty armed Vance Security officers guarded every entrance. Inside, eight-year-old Leo was sound asleep in a grand bed wrapped in soft silk sheets, holding a plush velvet bear I had helped him settle with.
In the adjacent executive study, I sat in a high-backed velvet armchair, wearing a clean cashmere sweater provided by Dante's staff, drinking a hot cup of chamomile tea. My bruised hands were neatly bandaged by top private medical staff.
Across the broad black granite desk sat Dante Moretti, alongside Senior Corporate Counsel Bridget Colton and two federal forensic accounting experts.
Bridget Colton opened three heavy, red-sealed leather binders, sliding high-definition digital financial dossiers flat onto the desk toward Dante:
"Dante," Bridget spoke softly, her sharp blue eyes holding profound professional fury. "The investigation into Sophie Vance and the audit of the Moretti Children's Trust is complete."
"Tell me, Bridget," Dante commanded, leaning back in his leather chair, his dark eyes fixed on me.
"First," Bridget revealed, "Sophie Vance's background is completely clean. Her younger brother, Danny Vance, passed away three years ago from an undiagnosed cardiac condition associated with severe autism spectrum disorder. Sophie developed the four-tap sensory calming technique to protect him."
Dante’s gaze softened just a fraction, a look of quiet, deep reverence flickering in his eyes as he looked at me.
"And the trust audit, Bridget?" Dante asked, his tone hardening.
"For three years," Bridget tapped the ledgers, "your stepmother, Evelyn Moretti, and her son, Julian, have been secretly poisoning Leo’s sensory therapy records. They paid off his private physicians to issue falsified neurological reports claiming Leo was permanently incompetent."
My breath caught in my throat. I leaned forward, my hands gripping the tea cup. "Why would anyone do that to an eight-year-old boy?!"
"To strip Leo of his biological fifty-one percent controlling equity in the Moretti Maritime & Corporate Trust," Bridget explained coldly. "Under your late father's will, Dante, if Leo was declared legally incompetent before his ninth birthday next month, the controlling proxies would automatically default to Evelyn and Julian."
A low, terrifying growl ripped from Dante’s chest, vibrating the heavy glass on the desk.
"And tonight at The Pierre Hotel, Bridget?" Dante asked, his gray eyes narrowing into razor-sharp slits.
"It wasn't an accident, Dante," Marcus Vance stepped forward from the door. "Vanessa Blake was paid fifty thousand dollars by Julian Moretti to deliberately trigger Leo's meltdown in front of the press, creating public grounds to file for emergency guardianship."
I stood up from my chair, my hazel eyes burning with a sudden, fierce, diamond-hard protective rage.
"They used a frightened child to steal a fortune," I whispered, every word falling like an iron block.

Dante slowly stood up behind his desk, walking around the granite counter until he stood inches in front of me, his tall six-foot-three frame towering over mine, his presence an unshakeable fortress.
"They tried to break my son, Sophie," Dante swore softly, his voice an iron promise that shook the room. "Tomorrow morning... we break their empire."
