Chapter 6 - The Rebirth of Emily VaneSix months later, the spring sun was shining brightly over the rolling green hills of my family’s private estate in Greenwich, Connecticut.

The old mansion where Ryan had tried to destroy me had been completely demolished three months ago by my father’s construction crews. Not a single stone remained. In its place, a breathtaking, state-of-the-art botanical conservatory and children’s medical research center was being constructed, funded entirely by the liquidated assets of Sterling Enterprises.

I stood on the stone terrace overlooking the construction site, wearing a simple linen dress, holding a warm cup of tea. The scars on my back had healed into thin, faint white lines—constant reminders of the storm I had survived, but no longer carrying any power to hurt me.

Footsteps approached from behind, and my father stepped out onto the terrace, wrapping a warm arm around my shoulders.

“The board of Vane International voted unanimously this morning, Emily,” my father said, a proud, radiant smile touching his face. “You’ve officially been named Vice Chairwoman of the global energy division.”

I smiled, leaning my head against his shoulder. “No more hiding behind fake names?”

“No more hiding,” Alexander agreed softly. “You proved to everyone—and more importantly, to yourself—that you have the heart of a Vane. You didn't just survive the fire, little bird. You built a kingdom out of the ashes.”

My phone chimed on the stone table beside me.

I picked it up and glanced at the news notification on the screen:

“Former Real Estate Tycoon Ryan Sterling Sentenced to 18 Years in Federal Penitentiary for Wire Fraud and Asset Laundering.”

Beneath the headline was a mugshot of Ryan—his hair shaved, his face thin and gaunt, staring blankly into the camera without a trace of his former charm or arrogance.

I turned off the screen and set the phone face-down on the table. I didn't feel triumph. I didn't feel bitterness. I felt only a deep, profound peace.

He was locked in a cage of his own making. And I was standing in the sunlight, completely, beautifully free.
