Chapter 2 - The Fall of the IllusionThe man standing in the ruined doorway of our estate was Alexander Vane—the elusive, ruthless patriarch of Vane International, a global conglomerate that controlled logistics, defense manufacturing, and energy infrastructure across three continents. He was a man whose net worth wasn't measured in millions or billions, but in geopolitical influence.

And he was my father.
Ryan knew the face instantly. Every business executive in the world knew Alexander Vane. Ryan had spent five years trying to secure a five-minute meeting with Vane International’s board, only to be rejected at the door by junior assistants.
“A-Alexander Vane?” Ryan stammered from the floor, his voice cracking like a terrified child's. His hands were shaking as he looked from my father to the tactical team fanning out through the marble hallway. “What… why are you here? What is this?”
Alexander didn't answer him. He didn't even look at Ryan.
My father walked steadily across the blood-stained marble, his leather shoes clicking against the stone until he stood right in front of me. His sharp gray eyes took in my split lip, my torn clothes, and the blood soaking through the back of my blouse. A terrifying, predatory darkness settled over his face—a look that had brought down rival corporations and corrupt governments alike.
He reached out, gently cupping my cheek with a warm, calloused hand. “You stayed away too long, little bird.”
“I wanted to build something real, Dad,” I whispered, my voice thick with emotion. “I thought I could make a normal life.”
“There is no normal life with wolves, Emily,” my father replied softly. He pulled off his heavy cashmere overcoat and gently wrapped it around my shoulders, covering my wounds.
Then, Alexander turned around to face my husband.
The atmosphere in the room plummeted below freezing.
“You…” Ryan gasped, staring up at my father, his mind frantically trying to piece the impossible puzzle together. “Emily… Emily Vane? You’re… you’re his daughter?”
“She is my only child,” Alexander said, his voice quiet, flat, and chillingly devoid of emotion. “Three years ago, my daughter asked me to keep my name away from her life. She wanted a man who loved her for who she was, not for my fortune. She made me sign non-disclosure agreements, seal public records, and promise never to interfere in her marriage unless she gave the command.”
My father stepped closer, towering over Ryan.
“I allowed you to live in luxury, Sterling. I ordered my banks to approve your loans. I instructed my political contacts to grant your building permits. Every single brick of Sterling Enterprises was laid because I permitted it to stand.”
Madison let out a faint, terrified squeak, slowly backing away toward the dining room archway, her champagne silk dress suddenly looking absurd amidst the tactical team.
“Wait!” Madison cried out, her voice trembling violently. “I’m pregnant! I’m carrying his heir! You can’t do this to us!”
Alexander glanced at her for a fraction of a second, as if looking at a piece of dirt on his shoe. “Your child will inherit nothing, girl. Because by sunrise, Ryan Sterling will not own the shirt on his back.”
My father gestured to the two federal prosecutors standing near the entrance. One of them stepped forward, pulling a thick stack of legal documents and federal seizure warrants from a leather briefcase.
“Ryan Sterling,” the prosecutor announced loudly, his voice echoing under the high ceilings. “As of 11:00 PM tonight, Vane Global Holdings has executed a full foreclosure on all primary, secondary, and corporate assets tied to Sterling Enterprises due to systemic breach of contract and material fraud. Furthermore, federal agents are currently raiding your corporate headquarters in Manhattan.”
Ryan’s jaw dropped. “Fraud?! What fraud?! I built this company!”
“You built it on debt underwritten by my daughter’s private trust,” Alexander interrupted coldly. “And while you were busy playing the big tycoon and beating my child with a riding crop, my forensic team spent the last forty-eight hours documenting your illegal offshore accounts, your insider trading, and your tax evasion scheme with the Brooklyn docks.”
Ryan looked at me, his eyes wide with a frantic, desperate pleading. He crawled across the floor toward my feet, blood staining his knees, completely stripped of his arrogant composure.
“Emily! Emily, baby, please!” Ryan sobbed, reaching out to grab the hem of my father’s coat. “I didn't know! I swear I didn't know! She made me do it—Madison manipulated me! I love you, Emily! We can fix this! Please tell your father to stop!”
I looked down at the man I had given three years of my life to. I felt no anger. I felt no lingering sadness. I only felt a cold, pristine emptiness.
I stepped backward, pulling the coat tighter around my shoulders, out of his reach.
“You told me you were tired of carrying dead weight, Ryan,” I said softly, looking down at him. “Now you get to carry yourself.”
My father looked at the captain of the tactical team. “Take my daughter to the private transport. Have the medical team treat her injuries immediately.”

As two gentle female guards escorted me toward the shattered front entrance, I heard the metallic snap of handcuffs behind me, followed by Ryan’s hysterical screaming and Madison’s frantic wailing as federal agents took them both into custody.
The nightmare was over. The execution of Ryan Sterling had begun.
