Chapter 5 - The Trap at MidnightThe night Dante flew back to Chicago, the temperature plummeted below zero, coating the trees of the Lake Geneva estate in a thick, glittering layer of ice.

Lena sat in the master study, trying to distract herself with a book on interior design, but her mind remained anchored on the empty guesthouse down the path. Dante had been gone for twenty-four hours. His security detail—a rotation of six elite operatives led by Marco—was stationed around the perimeter, their communications chatter humming softly through the encrypted monitor in the security annex downstairs.

At 11:45 PM, the quiet hum of the monitor abruptly changed pitch.

Static.

Then, a sharp, automated alarm tone pierced the silence of the manor.

Lena dropped her book. She rose quickly from the armchair, pressing a hand against her lower abdomen as her heart hammered against her ribs.

The security monitor in the hallway flashed red.

Perimeter breach. Sector Four. North Gate.

Before Lena could reach the intercom, the power in the main estate flickered twice and died completely. Emergency backup generators kicked in a second later, bathing the hallways in a dull, amber glow.

Heavy thuds echoed from the front foyer.

Gunfire.

Muted, suppressed cracks echoed through the stone walls, followed by the sound of breaking glass and heavy boots stomping across the marble floor.

Vanguard operatives. They had found her.

Panic threatened to paralyze her, but maternal instinct took over with terrifying clarity. Lena didn't freeze. She backed away from the study door, locked it from the inside, and rushed toward the hidden panic room panel concealed behind the heavy mahogany bookcase.

She punched in the six-digit biometric code Dante had forced her to memorize three weeks before she left Chicago.

Click.

The heavy steel door of the panic room slid open, revealing a warm, lit sanctuary equipped with independent air filtration, communication arrays, and emergency medical supplies.

Just as Lena stepped inside, the handle of the study door rattled violently.

“Found the private quarters!” a harsh, unfamiliar voice shouted from the hallway. “Kick it in!”

Crash!

The antique mahogany door splintered inward, crashing against the wall. Two men in black tactical gear, their faces concealed by balaclavas and bearing the insignia of the Vanguard Syndicate, burst into the room.

They swept their assault rifles across the space, their eyes landing immediately on the open steel vault door and the hem of Lena’s gray robe disappearing inside.

“Target spotted!” the lead operative barked into his shoulder radio. “She’s heading into the safe room!”

Lena slammed her hand onto the manual emergency close button on the inside frame of the vault door. The thick steel slab began to slide shut, sealing her off from the horror outside.

Suddenly, a heavy combat boot wedged itself into the closing gap, jamming the mechanism.

Lena gasped, throwing her entire body weight against the heavy steel door, tears streaming down her face as she pushed with every ounce of strength she had left.

“Gotcha, Mrs. Moretti,” a cruel voice sneered from the crack in the door as fingers wrapped around the steel edge, trying to wrench it open. “Mr. Vanguard sends his—argh!”

The hand suddenly vanished from the gap.

A wet, sickening crunch echoed through the study, followed by a muffled gurgle and the sound of a heavy body hitting the floor.

Lena stopped pushing, her chest heaving as she stared through the narrowing gap.

Standing in the ruined doorway of the study, illuminated by the amber emergency lights, was Dante Moretti.

His overcoat was soaked in melting snow and dark, wet blood that wasn't his. His face was a mask of cold, terrifying fury, his dark eyes burning with the demonic wrath of a king whose domain had been violated. In his right hand, he held a suppressed Sig Sauer pistol, the barrel still warm and smoking.

The second Vanguard operative spun around to fire, but Dante was already moving with lethal, inhuman speed. Two silenced shots echoed through the room. The operative dropped instantly, sliding down the wall in a lifeless heap.

Dante didn’t blink. He stepped over the bodies, crossed the study in two strides, and planted his hand against the outside of the panic room door, pressing the manual override button to lock it securely.

Then, he looked through the small, reinforced glass window directly into Lena’s wide, terrified eyes.

“You’re safe,” Dante said, his voice dropping into a fierce, tender whisper through the intercom. “I’m here, Lena. No one will ever touch you.”
