Chapter 4 - The Showdown at the ParkOn Saturday afternoon, a crisp autumn wind rustled the golden oak leaves across Highland Park in Oakridge.

The public park was quiet, featuring a sunlit duck pond, wooden benches, and stone pathways winding beneath ancient maple trees.

I sat on a wooden bench near the water, wearing a warm cream wool coat, holding two-month-old Emma securely against my chest inside a fleece baby carrier. Sitting beside me on the bench, reading a legal brief, was David.

At 2:00 PM, a sleek black sedan pulled up to the curb near the park entrance.

Brandon stepped out.

He wasn't wearing his tailored charcoal suit today. He wore a dark jacket and trousers, but his hair was unstyled, his face pale, and deep dark circles hung beneath his eyes. He looked like a man who hadn't slept a full hour since the meeting at Sterling and Associates.

He walked down the stone pathway toward our bench, stopping five feet away.

His eyes immediately fell upon Emma sleeping peacefully against my chest.

"Jessica," Brandon spoke raspy. His voice lacked any of its old arrogant swagger.

"Brandon," I acknowledged smoothly, keeping my posture relaxed. "You have thirty minutes under Judge Vance's temporary order."

Brandon swallowed hard, taking a slow, hesitant step closer, dropping onto his knees flat on the stone pathway before my bench.

For the first time in six years, the man who had controlled my life, controlled my money, and threatened me with social ruin was kneeling in the dirt at my feet.

"Can I... can I hold her?" Brandon asked, his voice cracking with a raw, agonizing desperation that sent a quiet shudder through his chest.

I looked down at his trembling hands—hands that had signed away our marriage, hands that had bought diamonds for another woman while I sat alone in a cold house.

"No, Brandon," I replied softly, my hazel eyes holding his without a single drop of malice or anger. "Not today."

Brandon’s face contorted into a mask of pure, heartbroken shock. "Why?! I signed the papers! I gave you eighty percent of the equity! I ruined my relationship with Vanessa! I gave you everything you wanted!"

"You didn't give me everything I wanted, Brandon," I corrected gently, every word sharp as a diamond. "You surrendered what you were forced to surrender because you were afraid of going to prison for wire fraud."

I gently adjusted Emma's soft blanket, keeping her warm against the breeze.

"Holding a child isn't a reward for losing a lawsuit, Brandon," I explained. "It's a privilege earned through trust, honor, and consistency. You proved for nine months that you didn't care if my child lived or died as long as your public image stayed clean."

Brandon bowed his head, a heavy, shuddering sob tearing through his broad chest as he buried his face in his hands flat against the cold stone path.

"I ruined my life, Jessica..." Brandon wept softly. "I destroyed my family for a lie..."

May you like

I stood up slowly from the wooden bench, holding Emma close against my heart, looking down at the man kneeling in the dirt.

"You didn't destroy your family, Brandon," I murmured into the quiet autumn air. "You just forced me to save ours."
