Chapter 5 - The Partner Gala

The grand ballroom of the Metro Zenith Hotel glittered under thousands of crystal chandeliers, filled with the city’s legal elite, high-profile corporate executives, and wealthy political donors. The air hummed with the sound of clinking champagne flutes and polite, rehearsed laughter.

Ethan stood near the center of the room, impeccably dressed in a bespoke midnight-blue tuxedo, holding court with the firm’s senior managing partners and local judges. He looked every bit the picture of success, charm, and absolute authority.

Standing a few feet away, Vanessa hovered awkwardly in a shimmering emerald gown, her eyes darting nervously around the room. She had barely spoken two words to anyone all evening.

Claire entered the ballroom alone.

She wore a classic, elegant black silk cocktail dress that accentuated her poise without drawing unnecessary attention. As she moved through the crowd, several senior partners greeted her with warm compliments, entirely unaware of the civil and criminal storm about to break over their star litigator’s head.

At exactly 8:15 PM, the room’s ambient chatter dimmed as the current managing partner, Arthur Pendelton, stepped up to the mahogany podium on the raised stage, tapping his microphone for attention.

“Ladies and gentlemen, esteemed colleagues,” Pendelton’s voice boomed warmly across the hall. “Before we announce the new senior managing partner for the upcoming fiscal year, I’d like to invite our leading litigator—a man whose relentless drive, brilliant legal mind, and unwavering dedication have shaped this firm’s legacy—to say a few brief words. Ethan Sterling, please join me on stage.”

Polite, thunderous applause erupted across the ballroom.

Ethan beamed, basking in the adoration of his peers. He smoothed down his lapel, flashed a charismatic smile to the crowd, and began walking gracefully toward the steps leading up to the stage.

From her table near the back, Claire slowly opened her clutch purse.

She pulled out her smartphone, unlocked the screen, and tapped a single, pre-scheduled encrypted command: Dispatch package to all board members and press contacts.

Simultaneously, the large projector screens behind the podium—which had been displaying the firm’s corporate logo—suddenly flickered, went black for a fraction of a second, and then flashed a stark, bold headline: FORENSIC AUDIT REPORT: FINANCIAL IRREGULARITIES & EMBEZZLEMENT IN RE: ETHAN STERLING.

Beneath the headline, the split-screen display projected clear, high-resolution images of the forged offshore transfer documents, the Cayman account statements, and the hotel surveillance photos of Ethan and Vanessa walking into the Harbor View Hotel.

The applause died instantly.

A heavy, suffocating silence descended over the ballroom so complete that you could hear a pin drop on the polished parquet floor.

Ethan, who had just placed his foot on the first step of the stage, froze. He slowly turned his head back toward the massive projector screen, his face turning the color of ash.

Every head in the room turned in unison, shifting their gaze from the incriminating federal audit on the screen to Ethan standing paralyzed in his bespoke tuxedo, and finally back to Claire, who sat calmly at her table, raising her champagne flute in a silent, solitary toast.
