Chapter 2 - The Briefcase Discovery

The morning sun broke through the heavy gray overcast of downtown, casting long, sharp shadows across the hotel driveway. Ethan’s eyes followed Claire’s gaze downward, landing instantly on the white edge of the document sticking out of Vanessa’s briefcase. A drop of cold sweat beaded at his temple, betraying the calm exterior he was desperately trying to reassert.
“Put that away, Vanessa,” Ethan snapped, his voice cracking with an uncharacteristic edge of desperation as he lunged forward to block Claire’s view.
Too late.
In that single, agonizingly clear glimpse, Claire had registered key details that sent a shockwave of ice through her veins: the letterhead of an offshore financial firm in the Cayman Islands, a transfer authorization of four hundred thousand dollars, and a signature line meticulously traced to mimic her own hand.
Vanessa stopped dead in her tracks, her cheeks flushing a brilliant, guilty crimson. She looked at Ethan, then at Claire, realizing too late that their carefully constructed house of cards had just collapsed into dust.
“Ethan,” Claire said, her voice dropping an octave lower, carrying a quiet fury that made her husband flinch. “Open the briefcase.”
“Claire, please, don’t make a scene here in the middle of the street,” Ethan pleaded, lowering his voice into a soothing, patronizing register. “Whatever you think you saw... it’s a routine corporate escrow transaction. It has nothing to do with us. Let’s go home and talk about this like adults.”
“Open. The. Briefcase.”
The absolute finality in Claire’s tone left no room for negotiation. She didn't raise her voice. She didn't scream or lunge at Vanessa. She simply stood her ground, her eyes locked on her husband with such intense, unblinking clarity that Ethan felt stripped bare.
Realizing he was cornered, Ethan slowly reached out and unlatched the brass clasps of the leather briefcase. He pulled out a thick folder bound with a red rubber band—the very folder Claire had kept locked in her home office desk drawer, containing her pre-nuptial inheritance records, her father’s real estate trust deeds, and her personal bank account numbers.
“You’ve been cleaning out my accounts,” Claire whispered, the horrifying reality finally settling over her. “Everything my father left me... you’ve been transferring it into offshore shell companies using my forged signature.”
“It’s not what it looks like!” Vanessa blurted out defensively, stepping forward. “Ethan only did it to protect our assets from the upcoming firm restructuring! You don't understand how high the stakes are—”
“Shut up, Vanessa,” Ethan hissed, turning on the young associate with genuine fury before looking back at Claire. His mask of confidence was completely shattered now, replaced by the cornered expression of a white-collar criminal caught red-handed. “Claire, listen to me. We can fix this. We can divide the portfolios amicably. You don’t need to involve the courts, and you certainly don't need to ruin my career over a financial realignment—”
“A financial realignment?” Claire echoed, a dry, humorless laugh escaping her lips.
She turned away from them without another word, sliding into her car and locking the doors. Through the tinted window, she watched Ethan frantically grab Vanessa by the arm, their whispered argument turning heated as the reality of what had just been exposed set in.

Claire did not drive home. She drove straight to the offices of Marcus Vance, a legendary senior forensic accountant and private investigator whom her father had trusted implicitly before his passing.
If Ethan wanted to play hardball in a court of law, Claire was going to make sure he walked into the courtroom with a federal indictment waiting for him.
