Chapter 6 - The Price of Power

Three weeks later, the front pages of the Chicago Tribune read like an apocalyptic thriller.
“FEDERAL INDICTMENTS SWEEP CHICAGO: SYNDICATE CORRUPTION EXPOSED IN MASSIVE DAWN RAIDS.”
Photographs of arrested city officials, disgraced judges, and shuttered Veretti front businesses filled the media landscape. The power vacuum left by the collapse of the Veretti family was massive, but the Moretti syndicate—now operating under strict legal restructuring and international legitimacy—moved swiftly to stabilize the city's economy.
Inside the penthouse office overlooking the magnificent Chicago skyline, Elena stood by the glass wall, looking out at the city she had once feared, now feeling like it lay entirely at her feet.
The door chimed softly, and Luca walked in carrying a pair of crystal champagne flutes. He handed one to her, his movements fluid and unhurried.
"To new architecture," Luca toasted, clinking his glass against hers.
"To foundations that don't crumble," Elena smiled, taking a sip of the crisp champagne.
She had officially joined the board of the Moretti Foundation—a philanthropic arm Luca was using to reclaim blighted neighborhoods and fund architectural restoration projects across the city. She was no longer hiding in the shadows of her father’s past, nor was she running from the danger of her present. She was an equal partner in a world that devoured the weak.
"Your father would have been proud," Luca said quietly, reading her thoughts as he often did. "He spent his whole life trying to break the machine from the inside and nearly lost everything. You didn't break it, Elena. You redesigned it."
She turned, leaning back against the glass pane as she looked up at him. He wore a tailored charcoal suit that fit him like a second skin, his dark hair neatly parted, his gray eyes shining with an unmistakable pride.
"And you?" she asked softly. "Did you ever find what you were looking for?"
Luca stepped close, resting his hands on the glass on either side of her head, trapping her in the safest, warmest cage she had ever known.
"I spent thirty-five years believing power was the only currency that mattered in this city," Luca murmured, his gaze dropping to her lips before rising back to meet her eyes. "I was wrong. Power is just a tool. You are the prize."

He leaned down, pressing a lingering, tender kiss to her temple, then to her cheek, before capturing her lips in a deep, slow kiss that made her knees weak.
The danger hadn't vanished entirely—the underworld never truly slept. But as Luca's arms tightened around her waist, Elena knew she had nothing left to fear. She had found her fortress, and she had built it right beside the most feared man in Chicago.
