Chapter 6 - CheckmateMy heart stopped dead in my chest.

“Brandon...” I choked out, stumbling back from the bed. “They have Brandon.”
Julian’s face went deadly pale. Without a word of hesitation, he grabbed the heavy oak cane leaning against his nightstand, gripped the edge of the mattress, and forced himself up onto his feet. His legs shook violently, the strain of years of atrophy screaming against his muscles, but he stood upright.
“Stay behind me,” Julian commanded, his voice carrying the terrifying authority of a man who had nothing left to lose.
The bedroom door didn't just unlock; it was blown open with a violent crash.
Marcus stepped into the room, holding my eight-year-old son Brandon tightly by the arm. Brandon was pale, crying, and shaking with fever, a heavy guard standing right behind him with a pistol pressed lightly against the back of his small jacket.
Marcus looked disheveled, his tie loosened, a manic, desperate gleam in his eyes.
“Drop the drive, Julian!” Marcus screamed, raising his own pistol and aiming it directly at Julian’s chest. “You think you outsmarted me? You think a few encrypted files can save you? I have the boy! One twitch of my finger, and your little family reunion ends permanently!”
I took a step forward, tears streaming down my face. “Marcus, please! Let him go! Take everything—take the company, take the money, just leave my son alone!”
“Shut up, you whining bitch!” Marcus snarled, tightening his grip on Brandon. “Julian, drop the USB drive on the floor right now, or the kid gets it!”
Julian stood tall, his cane planted firmly on the hardwood floor, his right leg trembling under his weight. He looked at Marcus not with fear, but with absolute, frozen pity.
“You always were a shortsighted fool, Marcus,” Julian said softly. ☕
“Drop the drive!” Marcus shrieked, his finger tightening on the trigger.
“You shouldn't have mentioned federal marshals,” Julian replied calmly.
At that exact moment, the windows behind Marcus shattered in a deafening explosion of glass.
Flash-bang grenades landed on the Persian rug with a blinding white flash and a concussive roar.
Bang! Flash!
Marcus screamed, dropping his gun and clutching his eyes as the room filled with smoke and confusion.
From the shattered windows, tactical federal agents in full riot gear dropped into the room like descending angels, shouting orders and pinning Marcus and his guard to the floor in seconds.
Agent Miller, the lead federal investigator, stepped through the smoke, flashing his badge directly at Marcus as the steel handcuffs snapped onto his wrists.
“Marcus Bennett, you are under arrest for federal securities fraud, corporate embezzlement, extortion, and conspiracy to commit murder,” Agent Miller recited clearly over Marcus’s furious curses.
I didn't wait. I lunged forward, scooping Brandon up into my arms and crushing him against my chest. He sobbed into my shoulder, clinging to me with all his might.
“Mommy... I was so scared,” he whispered.
“I’ve got you, baby. I’ve got you,” I wept, kissing his feverish forehead.

Julian lowered himself back onto the edge of the bed, his breathing heavy, exhaustion finally overtaking the adrenaline surge. He looked up at me and Brandon, a gentle, profound smile touching his lips.
Marcus was hauled out of the room by federal marshals, screaming threats that no one was listening to anymore.
