Chapter 3 - The Wolf at the DoorThe door swung open before either of us could move.

Stepping into the bedroom with uninvited arrogance was a tall, silver-haired man in an immaculate Italian suit, flanked by two burly guards in dark coats. Marcus Bennett. The man whose face I had seen in financial magazines and news reports for years—the ruthless corporate titan who now ruled the family empire.

Marcus stopped midway across the Persian rug, his pale, sharp eyes scanning the room. He took in the disheveled bed, Julian’s rigid posture with his hand hidden beneath the pillow, and finally, me—standing frozen near the bathroom door in my faded, cheap clothes.

A slow, venomous smile spread across Marcus’s thin lips.

“Well, well,” Marcus purred, his voice smooth as oil. “It seems the new caregiver is working overtime. I thought I told your employment agency to vet your background more thoroughly, Julian. We can't have common street trash tracking mud through the family estate.”

Julian’s knuckles remained white around the pistol hidden under the pillow. “Get out of my room, Marcus. You have no business here at this hour.”

“Oh, but I do, nephew,” Marcus replied, taking another step closer to me. His eyes swept over my terrified face, lingering on the tear tracks still visible on my cheeks. “I received a rather interesting report from my night patrol. A rusted sedan was spotted parked three blocks away from the estate gates. Registered to a woman named Clara Hayes.”

My heart skipped a beat. My old car. I had parked it down the street so the staff wouldn't judge me.

Marcus chuckled softly, turning his gaze back to Julian. “Imagine my surprise when I checked our archives from twenty years ago. Clara Hayes... wasn't that the little South Side seamstress you used to pine over before we shipped you off to prep school? The one who conveniently disappeared around the time you tried to rebel against the family?”

Julian’s chest heaved with suppressed rage. “Leave her out of this, Marcus. She’s just a hired nurse. She has nothing to do with us.”

“If she’s just a nurse, why is she crying?” Marcus asked smoothly, stepping right up to me before I could back away. He reached out, his cold fingers brushing a stray lock of hair away from my face with mocking gentleness. “You know, Julian, she looks remarkably similar to a little boy living in a tenement apartment on 4th Street. A boy with your exact eye color.”

The room dropped into absolute, terrifying silence.

I stopped breathing. Brandon. They already knew about Brandon.

“If you touch him,” Julian snarled, his voice rising in raw, dangerous fury as he whipped the pistol out from beneath the pillow and aimed it squarely at Marcus’s chest, “I swear to God, Marcus, I will put a bullet through your skull right here in this room.”

The two bodyguards instantly drew their own weapons, stepping in front of Marcus. But Marcus didn't flinch. He just laughed—a cold, arrogant sound that echoed off the high ceiling.

“Go ahead and pull the trigger, nephew,” Marcus mocked, spreading his arms wide. “If I die tonight, my automated asset distribution protocols trigger immediately. Every account, every shell company, every trust fund transfers directly to the board. And within ten minutes, my men will pay a very special late-night visit to little Brandon and his little sister.”

Julian’s hand trembled. The gun barrel wavered.

The leverage Marcus held over him was absolute. Julian couldn't kill him without signing a death warrant for my children.

“Put the gun down, Julian,” I whispered, tears spilling over my lashes as I looked at the man I had loved and lost. “Please... put it down.”

Julian slowly lowered the pistol, laying it back onto the mattress, his face twisted in a mask of agonizing defeat.

Marcus smiled triumphantly, straightening his tie. “Smart boy. Now, here is how this is going to work. Clara is going to stay right here in this mansion as your permanent, twenty-four-hour live-in nurse. She won't leave the grounds, she won't contact her children, and she will do exactly what she’s told. And in exchange... Brandon gets to keep breathing.”

Marcus turned on his heel, walking toward the door with his guards trailing behind him. Right before he stepped out into the hallway, he glanced back over his shoulder.

“Enjoy your reunion, nephew. Family is such a precious thing.”
