Chapter 6 - The Promise on the WaterThe evening sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky over Lake Michigan in sweeping tapestries of rose, gold, and deep sapphire.

Marco raised his champagne glass toward our table, his deep baritone carrying cleanly across the quiet grounds.

"To Don Damon and Donna Clara Vance!" Marco toasted with profound, genuine pride. "The sovereign leaders who rule Chicago with unbroken strength, truth, and eternal love!"

"To Damon and Clara!" the entire terrace echoed in a warm, triumphant chorus, dozens of crystal glasses clinking together under the open sky.

Damon raised his glass, taking a slow sip of fine wine, holding me tight against his beating heart under the vast, open sky.

The acoustic band began playing a slow, romantic melody that drifted through the quiet evening air, mixing with the gentle sound of the lake waves crashing against the rocks below.

Damon took my hand, guiding me out onto the center of the stone terrace under the twinkling fairy lights, sweeping my body into a smooth, effortless turn beneath the stars.

"Do you know what I thought when I got that text, Clara?" Damon murmured into my dark hair as we danced under the stars.

"What did you think?" I asked, looking up into his storm-gray eyes.

"I thought that whoever sent that message was going to be the most important person in my life," Damon revealed softly, his hand tightening around my waist. "And I was right."

I rested my head comfortably against his broad shoulder, feeling his heart beat strong and steady beneath his tuxedo jacket, feeling a deep, weightless peace settle into every corner of my soul.

There were no abusive boyfriends breaking my ribs in dark rooms. There were no fake brothers abandoning me to die on stained carpets. There were no tears swallowed in quiet terror.

The frightened, dying girl on the floor was dead forever. The sovereign matriarch had claimed her throne.
