Chapter 5 - The Sanctuary in EvanstonBy 6:00 PM, the rain over Chicago had cleared, leaving behind a crisp, star-lit autumn night that painted the city skyline in sweeping tapestries of gold, indigo, and deep sapphire.

The sleek black Maybach glided smoothly off the interstate, pulling up to the quiet, tree-lined driveway of the Lakeside Specialized Care Center in Evanston.

The care center was a magnificent, private brick estate overlooking Lake Michigan, surrounded by manicured gardens, warm streetlights, and twenty-four-hour specialized medical personnel.

I sat in the rear seat of the Maybach, looking out at the warm, glowing windows of the facility, my hands clutched tightly in my lap.

Dante sat beside me, wearing his dark suit, his broad hand resting gently beside mine on the leather seat.

"We don't have to go inside if you're tired, Emily," Dante said softly, his voice full of deep, genuine concern.

I looked at him, my hazel eyes shining with quiet emotion. "You paid the full annual tuition for Leo's care three hours ago, Dante. Eight thousand dollars a month... paid in advance for five years."

Dante looked out the window toward the brick building.

"Your brother deserves the finest care in North America, Emily," Dante spoke, his deep baritone soft and absolute. "And you deserve to sleep at night knowing he is safe."

Tears of wild, overwhelming gratitude burned behind my eyelashes. I reached out my hand, laying my fingers over his broad, calloused palm, feeling the steady, warm pulse beneath his skin.

"Thank you, Dante," I whispered.

We stepped out of the Maybach together, walking up the brick steps into the warm, sunlit lobby of the care center.

Inside the quiet art therapy room, sitting near a large window overlooking the lake, was my twenty-six-year-old brother, Leo. He wore a comfortable gray sweater, his dark hair soft, holding a paintbrush as he painted a watercolor landscape of the lake.

His face was calm, his eyes clear, free from the terrifying hallucinations that had plagued his youth.

"Emily!" Leo smiled warmly, setting his paintbrush down, standing up to wrap his arms around my shoulders in a gentle hug.

"Hi, sweetie," I smiled, pressing a kiss against his cheek.

Leo pulled back, his bright eyes moving over my shoulder, landing on the broad six-foot-three frame of Dante Marino standing quietly near the doorway.

Leo studied Dante’s dark suit, his carved jaw, and his storm-gray eyes.

"Are you the man who bought the new oil paints for the art studio?" Leo asked innocently.

Dante stepped into the room slowly, his terrifying, sovereign posture softening completely as he looked at my brother.

"I am, Leo," Dante answered gently, stepping up beside me, holding out his hand. "My name is Dante."

Leo shook Dante’s hand with a warm, genuine smile. "Emily talks about you in her letters. She said you're a hard man... but you always keep your word."

Dante turned his eyes slowly toward me, a soft, breathtaking warmth filling his storm-gray eyes that made my heart flutter wildly against my ribs.

"I will always keep my word to your sister, Leo," Dante promised softly. "Always."
