Chapter 2 - The Audit of Table FourBy 2:00 AM, the top-floor penthouse suite at The Romano Tower in downtown Boston was transformed into an impenetrable command center.

Outside the private elevator banks, twenty armed security officers in dark suits guarded every corridor. Inside, I sat wrapped in a warm cashmere blanket on a plush velvet sofa, sipping chamomile tea while private medical staff verified I was uninjured and resting comfortably.
Across the broad black granite desk sat Dominic Romano, alongside Senior Corporate Counsel Bridget Colton and two federal forensic accounting experts.
Bridget Colton opened three heavy, red-sealed leather binders, sliding digital ledgers and wiretap transcripts flat onto the desk toward Dominic and me:
"Dominic, Chloe," Bridget spoke, her sharp blue eyes holding surgical professional fury. "The forensic audit into Richard Vane and Vane Logistics is complete."
Dominic leaned back in his leather executive chair, his fingers intertwined, his cold gray eyes fixed on me. "Explain it to her, Bridget."
Bridget tapped the ledgers:
THE POISON DOSSIER: Toxicological analysis confirmed the poison used at Table 4 was a rare synthetic neurotoxin imported through Vane Logistics, administered via a private wine bottle set aside by Richard.
THE THIRTY-MILLION-DOLLAR EMBEZZLEMENT: Proof that Richard Vane and his brother Vincent diverted $30 million from the Boston Maritime Trust over three years.
THE BLACKLIST: Records proving Richard paid off seventeen Boston restaurant managers to blackball Chloe Henderson from securing employment across the city.
My stomach twisted into a knot of deep, fiery outrage. Tears of frustration and anger rose in my eyes, but I blinked them back, holding my chin high.
"They tried to starve me out," I whispered, every word falling like an iron block. "They fired me for saving a human life, blocked me from paying my mother's hospital bills, and sent hitmen to my home because I wouldn't let a man die."
Dominic slowly stood up from behind his desk. He walked around the granite counter until he stood inches in front of my chair, his tall, powerful frame towering over me, his presence an unshakeable fortress.
May you like
He crouched flat onto one knee in front of me, taking my small, trembling hands into his broad, calloused palms.
"They tried to break you, Chloe," Dominic swore softly, his voice an iron promise that echoed through the silent room. "Because they thought a waitress had no power. Tomorrow morning, I put the entire strength of the Romano empire behind your name."
