Chapter 1 - The Breach at the ThresholdThe heavy wooden door frame of my small two-room apartment in South Boston groaned under a violent, concentrated impact.

Outside, rain lashed against the cracked windowpanes, but inside, the air froze solid. Six-foot-four Dominic Romano—the undisputed ruler of the New England underground—didn't flinch. His storm-grey eyes remained locked onto mine, though his jaw set into a razor-sharp line of absolute, lethal control.
"Behind me, Chloe," Dominic commanded softly, his deep baritone dipping into a subsonic register that vibrated through the floorboards.
Before I could process the terror paralyzing my chest, Dominic’s chief of security, Luca Ferraro, drew a custom suppressed sidearm from beneath his charcoal jacket. He stepped silently to the left of the doorframe while two bodyguards in dark suits moved to flank the entry.
BOOM!
The lock shattered, splinters of cheap pine spraying into the hallway as the door burst open.
Three men in black raincoats and tactical masks lunged across the threshold, their suppressed pistols raised. But they hadn't expected to find Boston’s most feared crime boss sitting inside a five-hundred-square-foot apartment with a fully armed tactical detail waiting in the shadows.
Pfft! Pfft! Pfft!
The silenced gunshots were muted, echoing like heavy thuds against leather. Luca and the two guards executed the strike with terrifying, military-grade precision. Within four seconds, all three intruders collapsed onto the linoleum floor, disarmed and neutralized.
I pressed my back against the kitchen counter, my hands trembling violently, my knuckles white against the formica edge. My mother's unpaid medical bills remained scattered across the small laminate table beside Dominic’s untouched instant coffee.
Dominic stood up slowly, smoothing the front of his bespoke charcoal suit jacket. His broad six-foot-three frame filled the small kitchen, radiating an aura of untouchable, sovereign authority. He walked over to the lead intruder lying on the floor, stepping on the man's wrist until a suppressed firearm clattered away across the tiles.
Dominic leaned down, pulling off the man’s tactical mask.
Luca let out a low, dangerous whistle. "Boss... that’s Mickey Wallace. He runs private enforcement for Richard’s brother."
My heart slammed against my ribs. "Richard...? My manager at the restaurant?!"
Dominic turned back to look at me, his storm-grey eyes softening just a fraction, holding a quiet, intense reverence that made my breath catch in my throat.
"Your manager wasn't just hiding behind high-end dining protocols, Chloe," Dominic revealed, his voice smooth as silk and cold as winter ice. "Richard's brother, Vincent Vane, controls the shipping terminals we’ve been auditing. Richard helped poison my wine at Table 4, and when you called 911, you ruined a multi-million-dollar assassination."
Luca stepped forward, holding an encrypted military tablet. "Boss, the restaurant was just set on fire ten minutes ago. Richard is trying to burn the surveillance servers before we can pull the high-definition footage."
Dominic adjusted his platinum cufflinks, his expression turning to stone.
"He's too late," Dominic declared flatly. He extended his broad, warm hand toward me. "Chloe, your apartment is no longer safe. Tonight, you come with me to the estate. Tomorrow morning, we burn their syndicate to the ground."

I looked at the fifty-thousand-dollar envelope on the table, then at the three disarmed hitmen on my floor, and finally into the eyes of the man whose life I had saved.
I took Dominic Romano's hand.
