Chapter 2 - The Fortress on Lake ShoreThe armored SUV tore down the mountain pass at a hundred miles an hour, its heavy tires gripping the wet asphalt as rain lashed the black-tinted windows.

Inside the rear cabin, the soft amber ambient lights illuminated the leather interior. Leo sat in the front passenger seat, rapidly executing encrypted comms, while Dante sat beside me, allowing a private medic to clean and stitch the laceration across his forehead.

I sat huddled in the corner, wrapped in a heavy dark wool overcoat Dante had draped around my shivering shoulders. My hands were still caked with dried mud and blood, my hazel eyes wide with a mixture of shock, adrenaline, and furious betrayal.

"You knew Vanessa was going to sabotage the car tonight," I accused, my voice tight as I stared at him. "You let her do it!"

"I knew she was attempting a secondary contract," Dante corrected smoothly, waving the medic away as the last butterfly bandage was secured. "I didn't know she had bribed my primary mechanic at the estate to sever the hydraulic lines on the mountain pass."

He turned his storm-gray eyes to look at me, taking in my torn clothes, my scraped palms, and the unyielding fire burning in my hazel gaze.

"If you hadn't followed me in your battered Honda, Cara," Dante confessed quietly, his baritone thick with an unexpected, profound truth, "my car would have dropped three hundred feet into the ravine instead of catching on that pine tree."

I swallowed hard, looking down at my hands. "Why me, Dante? Why did you put my file on your desk six months ago? My father died five years ago in a precinct fire. What does he have to do with your wife?"

Dante leaned closer, his broad frame casting a long, protective shadow over the leather bench.

"Your father didn't die in a precinct fire, Cara," Dante revealed, every word dropping into the quiet cabin like cold iron. "He was executed by Vanessa's father—Marcus Moretti—because he discovered that the Moretti family was using city maritime terminals to traffic unregistered arms."

My breath hitched in my throat. Tears burned behind my eyelids as five years of buried grief and false official reports shattered inside my chest.

"My father... was murdered?" I whispered, tears spilling over my lashes.

Dante reached out his broad hand, his long fingers gently covering mine, holding them with a firm, unshakeable warmth.

"Your father was an honorable man, Cara," Dante swore, his gray eyes holding an eternal, unyielding covenant. "And tonight... we are going to finish the war he started."

The SUV turned sharply, passing through high iron security gates into the vast, stone courtyard of the Moretti Estate overlooking the Hudson River.
