Chapter 3 - Shadows in the Boardroom

While the rain continued to lash against the glass of the Highland Park mansion, miles away in downtown Dallas, a different kind of storm was quietly brewing inside the glass-and-steel monolith of Carter Tower.

Marcus Vance, the senior vice president of acquisitions and Ryan’s supposed right-hand man, paced aggressively across his plush carpeted office. He held a smartphone to his ear, his voice sharp and low.

"I don't care what the estate manager says, find out who this new housekeeper is," Marcus snapped into the phone. "Ryan has been erratic for three years, but lately, he’s been spending too much time at the estate. If he starts liquidating assets or rewriting his trust, our multi-million-dollar development pipeline is dead in the water."

Marcus had spent the last three years positioning himself to take control of Carter Enterprises should Ryan ever permanently check out mentally. He had funneled company funds into questionable shell corporations, manipulated zoning permits, and quietly bought up distressed commercial properties under dummy LLCs, banking on Ryan’s complete detachment from day-to-day corporate oversight.

A soft tap sounded at the office door, and a sleek, impeccably dressed woman stepped inside. It was Vanessa Sterling, a corporate spy Marcus had planted inside the high-end domestic agency that supplied staff to Highland Park’s elite.

"You wanted an update on the new hire?" Vanessa asked, closing the door behind her with a soft click.

"I did," Marcus said, turning around and narrowing his eyes. "What do we know about Emily Brooks? Is she a plant? Did one of our competitors send her?"

Vanessa shook her head with a faint, cynical smile. "Nothing like that. She’s just a desperate kid from a working-class neighborhood. Nursing school dropout, broke grandmother, zero corporate connections. She’s completely harmless."

"Harmless people don't usually gain access to Ryan Carter’s inner sanctum," Marcus muttered, crossing his arms over his chest. "Ryan hasn't let anyone past the second-floor landing since Clara and Lily died. If she’s managed to get him talking, she could destabilize everything we’ve built."

"Relax, Marcus," Vanessa urged, stepping closer to his desk. "The girl cleans floors and empties trash cans. She’s too busy worrying about paying for her grandmother’s oxygen tanks to care about corporate real estate portfolios. Besides, if she becomes a problem, I have ways of making domestic staff disappear from that estate just like the others before her."

Marcus stared out the window, watching the distant lights of Highland Park twinkle through the downpour. "Just keep a close eye on her, Vanessa. Ryan is a wounded animal, but a wounded billionaire is still dangerous when he wakes up."

Little did Marcus know, Ryan Carter had already woken up—and the woman he was trying to dismiss as harmless was about to become the catalyst for his complete destruction.
