Chapter 3 - The Confrontation at the Corporate GatesThree days later, the fallout breached the sterile glass walls of Sterling & Vance Consulting, Daniel’s prestigious financial management firm in downtown Boston.

I arrived mid-morning, dressed in a sharp charcoal pantsuit, dark sunglasses, and my hair pulled back into a severe, professional knot. My private security escort—retained through Rachel's firm—walked two paces behind me as I strode through the revolving glass doors of the corporate lobby.

The receptionist looked up, her eyes widening in immediate recognition. "Mrs... Mrs. Bennett? You can't be up here, Mr. Bennett is currently in an executive board meeting—"

"Good," I interrupted smoothly, not breaking stride as I headed straight for the private elevator banks. "Because I'm here to address the board."

When the penthouse elevator doors slid open on the forty-first floor, the atmosphere of corporate luxury was instantly pierced by raised voices echoing from the glass-walled boardroom down the hall.

I didn't knock. I pushed the heavy glass door open and walked right inside.

Ten senior partners sat around the massive conference table, heads turning in stunned silence. At the head of the table stood Daniel, his face flushed with frantic anger, waving a stack of legal papers at the firm’s senior managing partner, Arthur Sterling.

"...it's a malicious, fabricated smear campaign by a vindictive spouse!" Daniel was shouting, his voice echoing off the acoustic panels. "The accounts are legitimate business—!"

"Mr. Bennett," Arthur Sterling interrupted coldly, holding up a single document bearing a federal court seal. "Your personal accounts aren't the only thing under investigation anymore. The board has just received formal notice that the U.S. Attorney’s office is reviewing wire transfers totaling nearly two hundred thousand dollars routed through unverified foreign shell companies—funds originating from client escrow accounts that you managed."

Daniel froze. The color drained from his face entirely as he spun around, his eyes locking onto me standing by the doorway.

"Emma?" he breathed, his voice cracking with sheer disbelief. "What... what did you do?"

"I didn't do anything, Daniel," I said, stepping forward into the room with absolute, chilling composure. "Your greed did. Your arrogance did. And your pathetic inability to keep your hands—and your company funds—away from your college girlfriend finally caught up with you."

Daniel lunged across the room toward me, his hands clenched into fists, before two corporate security guards instantly intercepted him, pinning his arms behind his back and shoving him against the mahogany table.

"Get your hands off me!" Daniel roared, thrashing wildly. "Emma, you're destroying my life! You're destroying everything I’ve worked for!"

"You destroyed it yourself the night you walked out of St. Catherine’s Hospital while your wife was bleeding on an operating table," I said, looking down at him with the cold detachment of a surgeon examining a tumor. "And today, the board is going to learn that the man managing their multi-million-dollar portfolios is under federal indictment for corporate embezzlement and wire fraud."

Arthur Sterling stood up slowly from his chair, adjusting his suit jacket, and looked directly at Daniel with utter disgust.

"Mr. Bennett, effective immediately, you are suspended without pay pending an internal forensic audit," Sterling announced, his voice ringing like a death knell through the room. "Turn in your security badge, your company keys, and your laptop to security on your way out. You are barred from entering these premises ever again."
