Chapter 6 - REBUILDING FROM THE RUINSSix months later.

The spring sun warmed the historic waterfront district of Charleston. The air smelled of salt water, jasmine, and fresh beginnings.
Where the burnt ruins of the old Carter estate once stood, a beautiful, sunlit garden park was currently being constructed—dedicated to survivors of domestic control and psychological abuse.
I sat on a wooden bench overlooking the harbor, holding a cup of decaf tea for Emily, who sat beside me wearing a flowing linen dress, her pregnancy now beautifully visible at seven months.
Beside us, sitting in a wheelchair with a warm blanket across his lap, was my father, Julian. His health was improving every day thanks to modern medical care, physical therapy, and the love of a real family.
"The medical reports came back today, David," Emily said softly, leaning her head against my shoulder. "The baby is completely healthy. A boy."
Tears of pure, overwhelming gratitude filled my eyes. I reached out and gently laid my hand over her stomach, feeling the soft, tiny kick of our son.
"He’s going to grow up in a house filled with truth, Emily," I promised her, kissing her forehead. "No secrets. No manipulation. No dark rooms."
Grace Parker—our lead legal counsel—walked across the grass carrying a leather briefcase.
"Good afternoon, Carters," Grace smiled warmly.
"How went the final probate hearing, Grace?" Julian asked, his raspy voice full of renewed strength.
"It went perfectly, Mr. Carter," Grace revealed, opening her folder. "The court has officially voided every financial transfer executed by Eleanor Carter over the last thirty years. The entirety of the Carter Shipping Line estate, valued at eighty-five million dollars, has been legally restored to you and David."
"And Eleanor?" I asked quietly.
Grace’s face turned serious. "She rejected the plea bargain this morning. The judge sentenced her to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole at the Camille Griffin Graham Correctional Institution in Columbia. She will spend the rest of her life behind bars."

I took a deep breath, letting the finality of those words wash over me.
The mother who had sought to imprison everyone around her was now locked away in a cell of her own making.
