Chapter 3 - THE BREAKING POINTIn that split second, thirty years of conditioned obedience evaporated into pure, instinctual fury.

As Eleanor brought the heavy iron poker down toward Emily, I stepped forward, caught her wrist in mid-air, and twisted it sharply away.
The poker clattered onto the stone floor with a loud CLANG.
"Get your hands off me, David!" Eleanor shrieked, clawing at my face with her sharp red fingernails. "I am your mother! You obey me!"
"You are a criminal," I said, my voice dropping into an icy register she had never heard from me before.
I pushed her back, keeping my body anchored firmly in front of Emily and my father.
Julian stood up from his rocking chair, leaning heavily on his cane, looking at Eleanor with a mixture of disgust and deep regret.
"It’s over, Eleanor," Julian said quietly. "The property deed to the Carter estate, the original shipping line trust, the offshore accounts you opened using my forged signature... Emily found all of them in the hidden safe behind the wardrobe three weeks ago."
I turned my head to look at Emily in shock. "Three weeks ago?"
"I started noticing discrepancies in your mother’s monthly allowance three months after we got married, David," Emily explained softly, holding her bruised wrist. "She was withdrawing twenty thousand dollars a week from our joint business accounts. When I confronted her privately last month, she threatened to ruin your reputation. So I started investigating this house."
"You... you knew my father was down here?" I asked.
"I didn't know he was alive until last night," Emily confessed, tears welling in her eyes. "When you locked me in that storage room, I panicked. But then I remembered the old floorboards behind the wardrobe. I shoved the cabinet aside, found the latch, and fell down those stairs. That’s when I found him."
Eleanor laughed—a bitter, maniacal sound that echoed off the stone walls.
"You think anyone will believe you?!" Eleanor sneered, backing away toward the stone corridor. "A crazy daughter-in-law, a husband who’s been legally dead for thirty years, and a son who signed my power-of-attorney documents ten years ago! I own this house! I own the bank accounts! The police will take one look at you three and put you all in a psychiatric ward!"
She turned on her heel and ran back up the passage toward the storage room.

"David! Stop her!" Julian shouted. "She’s going to seal the iron storm door at the top of the stairs! If she locks that, we’ll suffocate down here!"
I didn't hesitate. I grabbed the paraffin lantern from the bench and sprinted down the dark tunnel after my mother.
