Chapter 5 - The Poisoned AppleI sat in my freezing, unheated mansion late that night, the amber glow of a single rechargeable camping lantern illuminating the pages inside Victor’s manila envelope.

The documents spread out across the coffee table were explosive.

Bank statements, corporate registry filings, and certified wire transfer logs dating back seven years—long before Elena and I had even met. They detailed a massive securities fraud scandal involving Elena's late father, Arthur Vance senior, who had allegedly embezzled forty million dollars from a municipal pension fund before mysteriously dying of a sudden heart attack just as federal investigators were closing in.

And according to the highlighted trail of paper...

The remaining capital—over fifteen million dollars in liquid untraced assets—hadn't vanished. It had been laundered through a series of offshore shell companies... and the current primary beneficiary listed on the trust was none other than Elena Sterling.

My breath caught in my throat.

My sweet, quiet, innocent wife—the woman who had just dragged me through the courts for financial dishonesty—was sitting on a literal mountain of stolen pension money.

"She played you, Julian," Victor’s voice echoed in my head from our meeting at the tavern. "She let you build the company, let you take all the public risk, while she quietly kept her own family's criminal fortune tucked safely away in reserve, waiting for the exact moment she could strike."

A cold, bitter anger surged through my veins, washing away whatever lingering guilt or remorse I had felt earlier that morning.

I had been a fool. I had mourned a woman who was just as ruthless, just as calculating, and just as corrupt as I was—she had simply worn a prettier mask.

I pulled my phone from my pocket, dialed Victor’s private number, and hit call.

"I'm in," I said the second the line connected. "File the emergency motion with the family court in the morning. Attach the pension fund audit. Let's see how innocent my loving wife looks when the judge realizes she's been harboring stolen federal funds."

"That's my boy," Victor chuckled darkly on the other end. "Sleep tight, Julian. Tomorrow, the war really begins."
