Chapter 2 - The Fall of a Master of the UniverseI didn't wait for noon. I dropped the phone onto the mahogany desk, bolted down the grand staircase, and threw myself out the front door, sprinting across the gravel driveway toward my black Mercedes.

My polished Italian leather shoes skidded on the early morning frost. I yanked the driver's side door handle.
Locked.
I pressed my fob frantically. The lights flashed, but the doors remained stubbornly sealed. On the windshield, tucked beneath the pristine wiper blade, fluttered a neon-pink parking enforcement notice and a bright yellow legal seizure sticker bearing the emblem of the State Superior Court.
VEHICLE IMPOUNDED PURSUANT TO ASSET FREEZE ORDER #8841-B.
"No," I muttered, slamming my fist against the cold glass of the window. "No, this is insane! This is my car! My company leases this vehicle!"
"Actually, Mr. Sterling, your company doesn't lease it anymore," a calm, professional voice spoke from behind me.
I spun around. Standing at the edge of the driveway was a man in a sharp charcoal suit holding a sleek silver tablet. Behind him idled a flatbed tow truck bearing the logo of a premier repossession agency.
"Who the hell are you?" I demanded, my face flushing hot with rage as I tried to regain an aura of intimidating authority.
"My name is Marcus Vance," the man said, not blinking an eye at my fury. "I'm the court-appointed receiver for your personal estate. As of 6:00 AM today, your corporate credit cards have been deactivated, your personal checking accounts capped at a weekly living allowance of two hundred dollars, and your primary residence placed under receivership pending liquidation."
I stared at him, my mind spinning violently. "Liquidation? On whose authority? I am the majority shareholder of Sterling Global Investments! My board of directors would never allow—"
Marcus offered a thin, pitying smile.
"Your board held an emergency electronic session at 5:30 AM, sir," Marcus interrupted smoothly. "Your chief operating officer presented them with the complete dossier of your corporate fund embezzlement and offshore tax evasion that Mrs. Sterling so graciously provided to the federal securities commission. The board voted unanimously to strip you of your CEO title and replace you with an interim director."
The ground seemed to drop away beneath my feet.
In less than twelve hours—while I had been sleeping off a hangover in an empty bed, believing I was still the untouchable master of my own universe—my wife had systematically executed a coup that would have made Machiavelli proud. She hadn't just left me; she had systematically, clinically, and legally decapitated my entire existence.
"Where is she?" I growled, stepping threateningly toward the receiver. "Where is my son?!"
Marcus didn't flinch. He simply gestured to the tow truck as the winch groaned, hooking the steel cables securely around the chassis of my black Mercedes.
"Mrs. Sterling and your son are currently residing at a secure, undisclosed location," Marcus said evenly. "And I strongly advise you, Mr. Sterling, not to attempt to find them. The restraining order carries a mandatory sixty-day jail sentence for any violation."

The tow truck lifted my car off the frosty gravel, its tires spinning uselessly in the air as it began hauling my last remaining status symbol away down the long, winding driveway.
I stood alone in the freezing morning wind, wearing a two-thousand-dollar cashmere coat, clutching nothing more than the keys to a house I no longer owned, realizing for the first time in my life what true, helpless terror felt like.
