Chapter 6 - The Fall of Gideon VanceGideon let out a loud, scoffing laugh, adjusting his silk tie with arrogant flair. "Mrs. Miller... or whatever your name is. You have no standing in this office. Your husband signed a legally binding corporate guarantee encumbering your residential property for four hundred and eighty thousand dollars. If the debt isn't settled today, I take the house."

Rebecca Hayes stepped forward, pulling a sealed Manila folder from her briefcase, laying it flat over Gideon’s gold pen.
"The corporate guarantee signed by Ryan Miller was executed using a forged signature of Claire Vance Miller," Rebecca announced cleanly, her voice sharp as surgical steel. "Under Section 48 of the Illinois Financial Crimes Act, any commercial instrument generated through spousal forgery is legally null and void ab initio."
Gideon’s arrogant smile faltered for a fraction of a second. "That's a civil matter between you and your husband! My firm acted in good faith!"
"Your firm didn't act in good faith, Mr. Vance," I corrected softly, tapping the second document in the folder. "Because two hours ago, the State Banking Commission verified that Vance & Sterling used offshore shell accounts in Grand Cayman to artificially inflate Ryan's interest rates, driving him into illegal debt to force the liquidation of my mother's trust."
Gideon’s face went paper-white. His hands gripped the edge of his mahogany desk as his eyes darted frantically toward his private exit.
Two uniformed State Troopers, accompanied by Special Agent Miller from the FBI Financial Crimes Division, stepped through the double doors.
CLICK. CLICK.
Heavy steel handcuffs snapped shut around Gideon Vance’s wrists behind his back.
"Gideon Vance," Special Agent Miller declared flatly. "You are under arrest for High Commercial Fraud, Predatory Extortion, and Illegal Wire Laundering."
Gideon thrashed wildly as he was hoisted up by his lapels. "SOPHIA! DO SOMETHING! TELL THEM THIS IS A MISTAKE!"
Sophie looked at her older brother with cold, absolute indifference. "I spent six months letting you use me, Gideon. Today... I'm doing the right thing."
Gideon was dragged out through the high brass doors in chains, his loud, panicked curses echoing down the hallway until the heavy doors clicked shut.
Ryan sat frozen in his chair, looking up at me with bloodshot, weeping eyes, reaching out his trembling hands toward my pantsuit.
"Claire... please..." Ryan wept, heavy tears cutting clean tracks through his stubble. "You saved the trust... you stopped Gideon... My God, Claire, forgive me! I was stupid! I was weak! Let's go home... let's fix our marriage..."
I looked down at the man who had traded five years of marriage for secret loans, cheap flattery, and pathetic lies.

"There is no home to go back to, Ryan," I said softly, every word carrying a final, unbroken truth. "The Maple Ridge house is listed for sale today. My attorney will meet you in court for the final divorce decree."
I turned my back on him, walking cleanly out through the double doors into the bright morning sun, leaving him to face the total, public ruin of his life.
