Chapter 2 - The Truth in the RainBZZZ.

A second text from Sophie appeared on the screen.
SOPHIA: "My brother used me to get close to Ryan six months ago because Ryan was managing the primary logistics contracts for the West Side port development. Ryan thought I was interested in him, Claire. He thought he was playing the charming mentor. But he had no idea Gideon was using him to access your family's inheritance trust."
I sat up straight in bed, my hands trembling violently as I read her words.
My late mother had left me a three-million-dollar private trust fund held under Vance & Colton Trust Management in Boston—a fund that required my explicit, joint marital signature to release primary liquidation rights once I turned thirty-three.
My thirty-third birthday was forty-eight hours away.
Ryan hadn't just written an email wishing he’d met Sophie before me because he was falling in love. He had been quietly desperate, drowning in nearly half a million dollars of secret debt, manipulating both of us to secure my signature on my mother's trust the second the clock struck midnight on my birthday.
I let out a low, shuddering breath, a cold, razor-sharp clarity burning away the lingering fog of heartbreak.
For months, I had felt small. I had felt like the paranoid, unreasonable wife who was being replaced by a younger, funnier colleague. I had cried in the shower, analyzed every text message, and wondered what I had done wrong to make my husband stop looking at me.
The truth wasn't that I was inadequate.
The truth was that my husband was a weak, greedy, and foolish man who had sold his soul to a corporate shark, traded his dignity for flattering smiles, and put our entire future on the line for a gamble he was guaranteed to lose.
I looked down at Milo sleeping peacefully at my feet, then reached for my laptop on the nightstand.
I opened an encrypted file folder containing the financial audits my private investigator, Marcus, had compiled over the last three weeks.
I typed a single text to Sophie.
CLAIRE: "Where are you?"
SOPHIA: "In my car outside your house. Ryan is inside pacing the living room, drinking scotch, and calling your phone over and over. He has no idea I know about the foreclosure."

I looked out the window at the rain lashing against the glass, my hazel eyes flashing with an unshakeable, sovereign fire.
CLAIRE: "Stay there. I'm coming back."
